I figured I'd post the "newer" chapters here, since it's been so long. Hope that's okay!
Since class is back I should be able to post a lot more often. Yaay!
Late May. It was the midpoint between spring and summer. The weather was officially pleasant enough to pry my mind off of work. Listening to everyone else yammering about their vacation plans didn't help. I found myself daydreaming about getting away when I probably should have been poring all of my concentration into doing my job.
When I got off that night the first thing I did was grab my phone and dial a certain familiar phone number.
"Hey. When does your vacation start?"
"Really soon. Why? What's up?"
"Well...I've been hearing about everyone else's plans for the last week or so. Going somewhere with palm trees, sand, and clear water is starting to sound like an insanely good idea. I was thinking maybe we could like, go together. If you're interested, I mean." I bit my lip and anxiously awaited his response. After what felt like an eternity of thoughtful silence he finally spoke.
"Y'know, Southern California's amazing this time of year. How does that sound?"
"It sounds perfect." My voice was calm, but inside I was positively screaming for joy. In less than fifteen minutes we managed to put together a solid plan and I was psyched beyond all reason. If his voice was any indication (it usually was) he was every bit as excited as I was.
---
A week later I was sitting on my front porch, suitcase in tow, waiting for Apolo to pick me up. Late? Nah. He was never late. Why would he start now...?
The logic wasn't even remotely helpful until I saw his car racing down the road. He pulled into the driveway, leapt out of the car, and immediately flashed an apologetic smile.
"Sorry. I would've been here at least ten minutes ago but I got caught up in a swarm of post-Memorial Day traffic."
"It's alright. It's not like you're always late or anything." I bit my tongue to keep myself from saying something even more ridiculous than that. "I think we both know that's my job."
A very, very small part of me expected him to roll his eyes. Common sense, developed by all the time we had spent together up to that point, argued otherwise.
"Which, by the way, you do really well." He grinned and gently poked my nose. "C'mon, Marlise. Paradise awaits."

I don't like flying. Never have, probably never will. This was my dream vacation, millions of girls would have committed murder to be in my shoes, but I was still more than just a little nervous.
After I got buckled in I took a deep breath and closed my eyes as I exhaled. I opened them again when I felt his reassuring, pleasantly warm hand against mine.
"Gonna be alright?"
"Yeah. This is normal. If it wasn't for you I'd probably still be sitting in the terminal, shaking like a leaf." That feeling of caring and complete understanding had never been stronger. Somehow simply talking to him made me feel better, kind of like fear didn't stand a chance when he was around.
"I'm glad I could help, but don't thank me yet. I have a surprise for you."
Suddenly my mood switched from nervous to curious. I can't say I minded that.
"Okayy. What is it?"
"I know you like reading to pass time on long trips like this, so I brought this for you." A priceless, downright sweet smile as he handed me a book. My heart started pounding and the butterflies returned in full force. "You're the first person to read it besides the editors, so I hope you like it."
"I'm pretty sure I will." I couldn't hug him easily, since the plane was taking off, so I settled for squeezing his hand and whispering a quick "Thanks."
By the time the 'seatbelt' light went off I was much more relaxed. I read intently, taking in every word and feeling his hand stroking my shoulder as I turned the pages. At one point I took a break and we spent a few minutes talking.
"Have you ever been to California before?"
"Once, when I was like, twelve. It kind of sucked, though. My mother and I ended up getting into a huge fight over her boyfriend, and things pretty much went downhill from there."
"It won't this time. I can promise you that much." He shifted our clenched hands and kissed my fingers. "We're going to relax, have fun, and not worry about anything or anyone. How does that sound?"
"Perfect. Just one question."
"Shoot."
"Where, exactly, are we staying?"
"That's a surprise. You'll see when we get there."
---
"There" turned out to be a paradise in hotel form. It was a beachfront property with modern architecture, complete with palm trees and fountains. The place was modern, no question about that, but it was very natural at the same time. The moment we walked through the doors I felt very, very out of place.
"I..I can't stay here. It's not right."
"Why not?"
"It's too..I don't know.."
"Glamorous? Expensive?" He supplied, raising an eyebrow and quirking his head. The barest trace of a smile was tugging at his lip.
"Well..Yes, you could say that."
"Don't worry about it. This is your vacation too, and I want you to have the time of your life. Besides, I heard that this hotel has a strict policy against paparazzi interference." ZAP! Just like that my mind was changed.
"I could definitely live with that." I was trying to sound neutral but couldn't keep myself from grinning.
"Glad to hear it. So, shall we?" He grinned and held out his hand in the undeniably charming style that made me smile every single time.
"You bet. Let's go."
