Hi... I haven't been here in ages, is seems! (We're at our Mammoth Mountain timeshare for a short stay) Months ago, we bought our tickets for OT/4 days, including hotel reservations, in case anyone is wondering. We also have our flights reserved. It'll be a sight-seeing trip, sort of...LOL! We fly JetBlue (great rates) to Seattle, then AMTRAK on the Empire Builder, to Milwaukee, rental car reserved for drive to Marquette, and back to Chicago. Flying back to Long Beach, CA on JetBlue (great rates again)... cheaper than Southwest! We're bringing our best friend who travels a lot with us. She wants to see the the northern route of the AMTRAK. Let's hope she enjoys short-track! She must be curious cos we talk about the skaters and the sport quite often. She has no knowledge about the sport... so it'll be interesting!

I just booked a great rate to Milwaukee on Air Tran - a non-stop both ways for $257... we arrive on Monday about 2pm and drive to MQT. It's about a 5-1/2 hour drive, but with the non-stop flight, it's actually only 2-3 hours longer than if we flew straight into Marquette, and about $200 cheaper for the two of us (hubby's going too). I've heard that it's a pretty drive! We'll roll into MQT in time for a late dinner.

I fly into Marquette Thursday afternoon. I'm staying at the Holiday Inn and I hope my old shorttrack traveling buddy, Pattie, will be able to come. Looking forward to meeting y'all at dinner. For me this is sort of the end of an era. I began on Ohnozone in 2002, went to my first WC Competition in SLC in 2/03 and then to Calgary and Marquette in fall 2003. Goteburg, Sweden for Worlds in 2004, Budapest, Hungary in 2005 and back to SLC in 2007. I took up skating with our local club (tonight all but one of our "A" group skaters was over 50, we call ourselves the AARP Speedskaing Club, lol). It's been a great ride. I think this will be the last time I get to see Apolo (and hopefully Allison) skate in person. If you read the OZ archives you'll see what a great (and sometimes not so great) time we had in the hay day of Apolomania. The thing I like best about the new fans is that y'all are fans of the sport, and not just one skater. It's just great to see the enthusiasm for all the skaters, and the sport. So, I'm jazzed and ready for those last two days of the competition. Marquette is a lovely little town, and if the leaves aren't turning yet it should still be sunny and clear. I think of Marquette as sort of like Lake Woebegon, the little town that time forgot from "A Prairie Home Companion." See you there. SusanG

Hi everybody! I'm flying into Marquette late Thursday night. Should I rent a car or take a taxi to the hotel. How far away is the venue from Holiday Inn? I wish I could go for the whole week.

The airport is at a former Air Force base about 13 miles out of town. If, like me, you are used to crowded freeways, the UP is positively bucolic. The two lane into town has light traffic. I've not stayed at the Holiday Inn before, but I remember that there was one main drag where the newer hotels and eateries were. NMU is in the older part of town, a short drive away. It's not a place you can stay lost in long

Ok i finally booked my trip for Marquette. I arrive late thursday nite(in Marquette) and we'll be staying at the Holiday Inn. Thanks Ladies for all your great info and feedback, it was greatly appreciated!! and like one of the ladies said earlier, this will probably be the last time I see Apolo and the rest of the U.S. Team compete again. It so expensive, and so worth it. but after this trip, I have to come back to reality..LOL

Thank you sk8er for the info. I guess since I'm not familiar with the area, I should just get a taxi.

Stfan, the Holiday Inn does not have airport transportation, so unless someone else is arriving at the same time you are, a taxi would be your best bet . The Berry Center is about 2.5 miles from the Holiday Inn, and the transportation arrangements between the two have been arranged by the the USOEC, so would most definitely be for the athletes only. Like last time, though, I'm sure you could find other fans who will be going and would be happy to give you a ride...

Hi Lori! How are you doing? Thank you for the info. That helps a lot. I'm looking forward to see everyone again and meet new people. It's going to take me about 12 hours to get there in order to save some money with all the stops and all. See you there.

I've updated the 'Big Three' trip-planning pages on Rocker-U with the best info summaries that I have at this time: Olympic Trials: www.rocker-u.net/us_champs.htmWorld Cup 4: www.rocker-u.net/world_cup4.htmWinter Olympics: www.rocker-u.net/olympics.htmThe RU pages take the place of the Yahoo Group that we used for several years for our trip-planning, and they'll provide quick-reference summaries of all the info that we've dug up over the past few months.
