The skaters themselves voted not to go to South Korea, so it wasn't something that was forced on them. Although I do think there was/is some jealousy on a few skaters' part for Apolo's talent and success. Just pieceing together the proposed time line..... -They didn't go to Korea because of death threats made against Apolo (not the team or Americans in general). Apolo, confering with his dad, decided not to go and the rest of the team voted and decided not to go (in support of Apolo and protest against the unreasonable fan's reaction to Apolo?) -Those death threats were made because of alleged and arguable "grandstanding" on Apolo's part that resulted in the judges, rightly or wrongly awarding him a medal -The team didn't get a replacement event to go to (although there were some others on the int'l schedule) -Because Apolo was so famous (largely for winning that medal and the controversy it generated) he had the sponsors and $$ to pay his own way to another event the other skaters couldn't afford to go to except for .... his girlfriend, who, at the last minute, had some secret sponsor cough up the dough (hmmm, wonder who it was?) -Apolo later made remarks that going to that extra international competition really helped his competiveness that season -Rusty (another medal winner from Salt Lake but the press never latched on to him) lost his temper with Apolo at an event where Apolo sure seemed to be pulling the same stunts that had him throwing up his hands in drama at Salt Lake. Their was some disgruntlement on the team and you are surprised!!!! You blame them for being jealous (I'd say "frustrated")? These are fiercely competitive athletes not saints (that includes our lovely Apolo). Maybe Apolo didn't fight back that weekend 'cause he knew they had a legit gripe. Certainly, it had to look to his teammates like they were supporting "team Apolo" and Apolo was supporting .... himself (and maybe his girlfriend). I don't have a clue what was really going down but that is how it looks from the outside. Yes the team got to vote on whether to go to Korea. It was not a unanimous vote. There were some who still wanted to go to Korea. Those feelings spilled over that weekend in Cleveland. After Rusty called Apolo a prima donna in the next race Apolo beat Rusty at the finish line and raised his hands with his fingers raised letting Rusty know he was still #1. The first night they presented awards Shani was a no show and Rusty finally came on the ice with Apolo. The next night Rusty was a no show but Shani showed up for awards. Apolo always showed up. It was a very interesting weekend. The coaches were less than pleased with Rusty that weekend.

Great analysis, MT! Majestic, thank you for posting this info! I would not have known to watch if it weren't for you. What a wonderful and touching interview with the Ohno men! And my goodness, Apolo looked beautiful, as always! Guest, thank you or the info you posted here about Rusty's complaints regarding Apolo. I hadn't heard about that before. As Ruffian said, it makes me like him (more than before), even if the object of his ire was our beloved Apolo. I will admit that I was already developing a bit of a crush on Rusty before this anyway, though. Of course I couldn't resist searching for their comments, so here's a link to an article for anyone interested. I found it disturbing yet a little amusing at the same time (that's so wrong of me : sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2004/02/29/SPGN75AUA61.DTL

"possibly impeding a South Korean skater to win gold in the 1,500"
Er, how do you impede another skater when you are behind him?

epiphaniii - you would love Rusty more if you got to meet him. He is really a great guy. I will miss watching him skate and he sure does fill out a skin suit nicely too. ;D

Epiphaniii- You are masterful sleuth! Thank you for the article.
1. I can't believe they called Rusty an also-ran. Sh!tty! 2. Apolo admitted that he "muscled through" races and that he was neither the strongest or the fastest. He used "strategy." 3. From this article it appears the Rusty had every right to be pissed.

so are rusty and apolo friends??or more like acquaintances?? They have been friends for a long time. Just like all friends they have had their problems. I'm sure if Apolo keeps skating he will miss Rusty and the experience he brought to the team.

In other words, if the referee hadn't seen the cross tracking while it was going on during the race, it was not going to be reviewed and Apolo wouldn't have gotten the gold medal. So Apolo made a very smart move--he made sure the referee was watching--and it was called. Billie, how exactly did Apolo call attention to it? I'm going to presume that whatever he did was what the Koreans were referring to as "grandstanding". Thanks for the article link, epiphaniii, and for your comments, guest. As Apolo has said, when the guys are racing there's a lot of testosterone down there on the ice.
