Word is that JR did not skate today...unknown at present as to why. Allison apparently suffered a serious break to her ankle, has had a cast put on in a local ER, and is being flown home for surgery. Credit to the ladies over at AJ.com for the info. I'm starting to think that Apolo was wise to sit this one out with Worlds coming up. Did anyone try the TV transmission? I got up too late to try it out myself. Hopefully I'll be better rested by tomorrow. Here's a link to a Bulgarian photo agency: www.bulphoto.com/events/15834/Eighth photo down is of Katherine Reutter (#76) racing in one of Friday's heats. The Bulgarian word for short track is in the title for that photo and looks like Wopttpek. Interestingly, it's completely phonetic. They say it just like we do. If anyone cares to hunt, you can cut and paste the word into the search engine for Google Bulgaria: www.google.bg/I haven't seen much of interest pop up yet, but I'll keep looking.

Maybe JR decided the whole thing was a mess and bowed out (I'm hoping, 'cause I'm not liking the alternative....) Skaters limping off or being gurney-ed off the ice should be proof enough that the pad systems most used just aren't safe. And when you think about it, how tough can it be to remove the boards and get some elastic banding to attach all the pads together if they can't afford the new ones? I mean seriously, it's gotta be better than what they're doing... bodies hitting immovable objects. (I'll put in my own two cents too, I think the pads should be wrapped in the same fabric as their skinsuits...hard rubberized plastic doesn't have much 'give' to it...) hey just a thought.... ....but I'm still heartbroken for Allison... ugh, ankle injuries are just hell....

A big thanks to Mtnme and BBB for the all the updates during the night. I am so sorry to hear about Allison's injury. I hope she has a quick and successful recovery. It is kind of scary not knowing about JR. I hope he is okay.

OMG, I feel so bad for Allison. A broken ankle. Hopefully her surgery will be successful and she'll recover quickly. I agree with you Mtnme on the pad system. Safety of these skaters should be top priority. I'm certainly hoping nothing happened to J.R. Thanks, Susie for that information. Where is the link to the TV transmission?

Bulgarian TV: No one had any luck with the link that I posted earlier, so let's give this a whirl tomorrow at 9:00 AM Eastern (the broadcast is at 4:00 PM local time in Bulgaria.) BNT (Bulgarian National Television) -- Home page: www.bnt.bg/BNT Sports: (The word sport in Bulgarian looks like "cnopt".) www.bnt.bg/bg/sportThe trouble is, I can't figure out where to click to get a live stream. They supposedly stream directly from their own website, and these are their webpages. If anyone can figure this out, let us know.

One of my favorite Korean websites for short track information has posted a few photos. You can see Katherine racing in her 1500 final (silver medal) and Jeff Simon racing in his 1500m final (8th place finish.) Click on the photos to enlarge. hs1206.tistory.com/903

LOL Susie! I can just visualize it! What? do you have an English to Bulgarian dictionary??? But onto some good news- well sorta. Apparently JR smacked his knees pretty good during one of the earlier relays and was advised to scratch the rest of the days' races, which he did. He is planning on warming up for todays (Sunday's) races, so we'll see. If not, JR will be looking forward to Germany. JR's mom (Sue) says thanks for all your concern and well wishes.

I'm glad to hear that J.R. is not seriously hurt. Do we have an exact time as to when everything starts on Sunday?

Thank you everyone for all the news. This is a dangerous sport and the injuries these young people incur are lasting. Apolo has simply lead a charmed life in terms of major injuries. I'm so sorry about Allison's injury, and I hope Jeff isn't pushing his back. We're hosting California State Championships next weekend and looking forward to those SoCal skaters coming up to the Bay Area. I was talking tonight with someone and we realized that half the National Team comes out of Wilma's program. What a powerhouse!

repechage starts at 8:50 am Sunday - Sofia, which is 10:50 pm Pacific Saturday. The main event starts at 2pm Sunday which translates to 4 am (OMG!) Pacific Hey, and thanks of the info on the California Championships. I'll have to think about that....
