The Koreans are going crazy again over the 1500m result. Lee Jung-su was quoted saying something along the lines of "He [Apolo] used a lot of hand action; but it's not a foul if the officials don't call it...He's doesn't deserve to be standing on the same podium [with me]."
And you know that the Korean media is practicing yellow journalism, so I think that's fanning the flames. And, of course, they brought up the 1500m race in 2002.

It will be intereting to see how Jung-su reacts to AO and JR at the medals ceremony tonight.

These guys just never quit. I don't doubt Apolo brought everything he had and knew to the table. But I'd bet too that the Koreans were handing it out themselves. They'll miss having Apolo to kick around when he retires in glory! Last Second Accident Leads to Silver, but Detractors Want to Scandalize Victory 3 Apolo Ohno raced in the 1500m Men's Short Track to a Silver Medal on Saturday at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Ohno finished the race in the final race in 2:17.976, just behind the Gold Medalist Jung-Su Lee, who finished in 2:17.611. A moderate controversy has been stirred by the event, one that even brought the ire of The Korea Times and much of their South Korean readership. The controversy stems from an accident on the track and the apparent reaction of famed American skater Apolo Ohno. During the final turn of the Men's 1500m final, three South Korean skaters were in the top three positions, leaving Apolo Ohno in fourth place. As they are coming out of the turn, Ho-Suk Lee tried to make an inside pass and collided with his own teammate. The accident resulted in disqualification for Ho-Suk Lee and fifth place for his teammate, Si-Bak Sung. What tempted the ire, though, is not the accident, but the comment made by Apolo Ohno after the race. After the race, while being interviewed by NBC correspondent Andrea Joyce, he replied "Yeah, but, whatever, that's the nature of the sport." His reaction after the event, while jovial, appear to be friendly and casual. However, his detractors view in a much more mean-spirited sense. The Korea Times pointed out that Apolo Ohno was a rough competitor who was "was actually hoping that there was disqualification of the other athletes who were racing ahead of him." (Korea Times, 2/14/2010) To stir the pot a bit more, the article in The Korea Times says the quote came from the Yonhap News Service, but the quote apparently cannot be found in the English versions of that publication. One blogger, Brian Deutsch, has been doing some leg work from his blog at Briandeutsch.blogspot.com, and has reported that he cannot find a single English translation of the interview in question. Last Second Accident Leads to Silver, but Detractors Want to Scandalize Victory 3 He does point out one key point. South Koreans have done very well in Short track speed skating. Just as movies like "Rudy" have shown us, people will always want to support the underdog in any competition. When it comes to South Korean skaters versus American skaters, the thought may be "What's the harm in a little banter to bolster national pride?" The harm comes in that it damages the credibility of the news organization if they are willing to print an interview that never occurred. As we enter day three of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, the controversy surrounding the events seems to be reaching fever pitches. From the malfunction of the Opening Ceremony torches, the accidental death of Nodar Kumaritashvili, to the Apolo Ohno "quote," the only question that people have on their minds now is, "What will today's controversy be?" www.associatedcontent.com/article/2700605/apolo_ohno_takes_silver_stirs_olympic.html?cat=14

They'll miss having Apolo to kick around when he retires in glory! Geez! You've got that right sk8er! The hubris of the Korean skaters effectively did themselves in, Apolo was nowhere near them ...and they still gotta find a way to blame Ohno. The Korean Newspapers (and apparently their gold medal skater) are the poster children for bad sportsmanship. We've all followed Apolo for awhile...never, not once, have I ever heard anything even remotely mean spirited out of his mouth. Every sound bite and interview he does he gives new meaning to the term 'diplomatic'. (So diplomatic it gets a little boring, actually! LOL) Hell, I should be so well behaved! LOL Apparently barring any actual bad behavior, the Koreans just make it up instead. If there is anything to karma, and I do believe that there is... Korea may be compounding their own bad behavior with even more screw ups. Hey, Works for me! Korea, get over yourselves. Your skaters screwed up. Plain and simple. Grow up, suck it up and deal with it. ( Don't you just have zero patience with namby, pamby wussy whiners?...)

mtnme, I 100 percent agree with your post, it was hilarious!
I am SO sick of these korean skaters whining about Apolo or anything else that gets in the way of their precious medals.
I love how they try to call Apolo out for that, when they were the ones that were blatantly fouling Apolo constantly. And all 3 of them up front? Can you say "TEAM SKATING".
I was seriously laughing when that Le ho Su(C)k ran right into his teammate, talk about karma. I'm sick of these cheating s.o.b's at the top of the sport, let's get em TEAM USA!

I'm sorry for your result, Lee Ho-suk, but that was a greedy pass.

Me too - if our guys weren't going to win, I would have like to have seen Lee get it, but, hey, our guys getting medals made my day! I'm excited for them both, but especially JR. That was...I don't know. I CANNOT believe Lee made a move like that! I would've preferred he won gold over Jung-su but, whatever. Congratulations, Apolo and J.R.!!!

Shortly before the Koreans crashed out of the race, there was some bumping & jostling between Apolo and a couple of the Koreans. I was worried the refs might try to call something there and Apolo would be one of those DQ'd. But the bumping didn't really hurt any of the Koreans; it seemed to affect Apolo the most. So I can't see why the Koreans are so upset. In viewing the video link that someone posted here, it's possible that Apolo may have inadvertently put his hand on the shoulder of one of the Koreans when he was swinging his arm back as part of his motion for taking another glide forward. It certainly wasn't intentional contact, & it didn't seem to interfere with the Korean. Now, the shove the Korean gave Apolo right after that.... was probably what caused Apolo to stumble and drop back. These guys just never quit. I don't doubt Apolo brought everything he had and knew to the table. But I'd bet too that the Koreans were handing it out themselves. They'll miss having Apolo to kick around when he retires in glory!]

Thank goodness for HDTV, replay, and frame-by-frame sequencing. The facts can be seen via those wonderful inventions. THEY ALL bumped one another. No one is innocent or overly guilty. Ummm....isn't that short track. So shut up and take a knee Korea. As noted above, paybacks are hell. Team skating is not allowed and you just got buffeted--finally. That stupid, stupid, stupid inside pass late in the game when Korea had it 1, 2, 3 was nothing but EGO ON ICE and look what happens.
As Mtnme noted above, Apolo rarely let's his diplomatic self slip up. The closest he came to complaining was the simple statement about alot of bumping going on. THEN what does he do---Whoops it up with J.R. and exits the interview to give J.R. his solo shot in the spot light. How do you spell magnanimous--APOLO!

...and to continue my mini-rant.
Someone suggested that there would be hell to pay due to the "natural order of things" within the Korean system. Give way to the top skater, you'll get your chance in 4 more years.
Oops--failure of the first order.

off-topic warning. LOL I'm loving the Pairs skating. All of this retro skate music reminds me of the Olympics of old except for that Send in the Clowns routine last night gag.
Commercial over
