Davis sets speedskating track record in 1,500

WEST ALLIS, WIS. (AP) — Olympic medalist Shani Davis set a track record in the 1,500 meters Saturday at the Pettit National Ice Center.
Davis won in 1 minute, 44.48 seconds, shattering by 1.96 seconds the mark he set on Oct. 22, 2005.
Davis, who won Olympic gold in the 1,000 and silver in the 1,500 at the 2006 Turin Games, plans to concentrate on the long track events at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
"I play around with short track because it's so much fun, but I think that I'll focus more on long track," Davis said on the second of three days of competition to select U.S. skaters for international competition.
In other events, two-time Olympic medalist Jennifer Rodriguez, returning from a two-year layoff, won the 1,500 in 1:58.11. In the 500, Tucker Fredricks won in 34.93, and Elli Ochowicz and Heather Richardson tied for first (38.91).
The 26-year-old Davis expects to contend for more Olympic medals. In the 1,000 last season, he won nine of 10 World Cup races, including the world single-distance title. He was the 1,500 World Cup leader and single-distance bronze medalist.
"I'm thinking that I go to these next games with a positive attitude, positive mind frame and ready to win," Davis said. "And once again I will try to do the best I can and have fun."
Davis said he was "hurt" during the 2006 Olympics by some media criticism for skipping the new team pursuit event. He refused to talk to reporters for more than a year.
Davis said he wants a better relationship with the media.
"I hope that we can just let that go, let the bygones be bygones," he said. "In every great American story, there's always some kind of bad event before someone has their sunny day. You're going to have your ups and downs but the real strong ones, they always find their way back to where they belong. They always find a way to better themselves."
