Ah, Wednesday. The fateful day was upon me.
From the second I woke up I was jumpy. I was getting the chance of a lifetime. Girls everywhere would literally kill to be in my position. I was terrified and excited all at once.
Without a sketchbook I’m open. Exposed. Vulnerable. Yet there was no way I was going to take one with me that night.
I looked somewhat poised. I felt nervous. As the hour approached I fidgeted more. Shoelaces were tightened, hair re-combed, and I re-applied a new layer of lip gloss at least seven times.
The doorbell rang. I jumped a little, grabbed my purse, opened the door…and came face-to-face with the most confident smile on the planet. He looked casual, relaxed, and typically handsome at the same time.
I couldn’t just stand there, I had to do or say something. But what? I settled for stepping out, closing the door, and brushing a few loose hairs out of my face.
“Hey. You look nice. Ready to go?”
“Definitely.” Well…not entirely, but I wasn’t about to let it show. Not tonight. No freaking way.
His driving matched his attitude: Calm, cool, controlled. Before he even said anything, though, there was yet another layer of lip gloss.
“So, are you psyched?”
“Almost unreasonably. This is so much cooler than just drawing.” For a split moment our hands touched, his fingers lingering over mine even as his eyes focused on the road.
“I’m glad to hear it.”
Don’t-think-Don’t-think-Don’t-think!
“So, Apolo…where are we going?”
“We’re getting some food and driving.”
“…Where?”
“You’ll see when we get there. Now, what are you hungry for?”
Wow. Good thing I wasn’t thinking.
“Honestly…A burger, some fries, and a shake sounds great.”
“Okay. That’s salt, fat, and grease with minimal nutritional value.” One raised eyebrow accompanied another unreadable expression. My eyes widened, jaw dropped. I tried to respond, but couldn’t even speak. Pure terror didn’t even cover how I felt, but I finally managed to stammer out one strangled word. “S-s-sorry.”
I didn’t even notice it, but he was laughing, poker face completely discarded.
“You do realize I’m just giving you hell, right?”
“Seriously?!”
“Completely.” Great! Once again, anyone else would have been punched. “I was actually thinking the same thing.”
“Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer some fancy restaurant?”
“I’m positive. Besides, most restaurants don’t have the drive-through option.” We pulled up to a window, and he turned towards me. “Is strawberry okay?”
“Yep.” It was great, actually. I was facing two of my biggest weaknesses at once and I wasn’t about to start complaining. A bag and two cups were grabbed before we drove off. By that point the sun had just set and I still had no idea where we were going. I munched away and attempted conversation.
“It’s so pretty here…especially at night.”
“I know. It’s amazing, isn’t it?”
He made a turn onto a side road that led out of town.
“Yeah…” Happy sigh. “Are we almost there?”
“Yes.” Even in the semi-darkness I could see an excited gleam in his eyes. “In fact…” Another turn. “ We’re here. What do you think?”
‘Here’ was secluded and open at the same time. There was some tree cover, but there was also a great sky view.
“Apolo, this is beautiful.” Understatement of the year.
“C’mon.” He left the car with a proud grin. I grabbed my shake and followed him..then noticed that he was perched on the trunk. I took his offered hand and scrambled up beside him. “Do you ever stargaze?”
“Not very often. I have been known to watch the moon, though.” He nodded at this and laid back, resting his head on his hands. Once again I nervously followed suit.
“It’s alright. You can scoot closer if you want.”
“Okay.” For some reason I couldn’t say ‘Y’know, I think I do,’ so I had to settle for that. I scooted. In response I felt him drape his arm across my shoulders. Almost a hug…almost.
“Check it out. The stars look really bright out here.”
“It’s peaceful. Relaxing…” I took a swig of my shake. “I love it.”
For a while we just stared up in silence. The only sounds were chirping crickets, leaves, and the occasional owl hoot.
“…So, this is the real Apolo…”
“Yeah. This is me. What do you think?”
“I’m impressed.” My eyes shifted to his. Suddenly the stars didn’t seem so important. “I mean, you know…”
“Go ahead.” Fingers squeezed my shoulder. “We’re both human, remember?” His words and touch were reassuring. Comfortimg, even. I took a deep breath and tried to explain.
“You’re smart, and you also have a sense of humor. The ‘real you’ is also deep, confident, and…a little romantic too.”
“Wow. Romantic, huh? I’ll take it.” My human side wanted to hiss him, and badly, but settled for moving closer. “I guess you could call this romantic.”
When I moved his arm shifted. I felt the light presence of his hand on my waist and didn’t mind one bit. Who would?
We stared at the sky for a long time, talking about random things in between intervals of peaceful silence. During one interval I realized something. I could really get used to this. Aand if I had to, I wouldn’t mind laying like this for a while. So peaceful! My eyelids were heavy, but I was still so relaxed…..

There's more to this chappy, but I gotta run Sorry. It'll be up on Monday. Promise!
