Thanks mellie and padfoot for the comments. It's always easier to keep writing when you know someone is reading. This was the hardest chapter for me to write.
Apolo was outside stretching when Katrina arrived the next morning. He waved her over and she started to stretch along with him.
Neither was talking and Katrina was becoming uncomfortable with the silence. “Apolo, thank you for the flowers they are beautiful,” Katrina said quietly.
Apolo raised his eyes meeting Katrina’s hesitant gaze. The sunlight shining on his face made the green flecks in his eyes stand out. After waiting for her to say more, Apolo asked, “Katrina did you receive my note?”
“Yes,” Katrina said.
“Well, is that all you have to say?”
“Apolo, I thought last night we agreed we would take things slow, just be friends and see how everything works out,” Katrina said.
“No Katrina, that is what you decided,” Apolo said as he straightened up and started moving closer to her. “I meant what I said in the card. Those flowers still show exactly what I feel for you. I want you back in my life. I know you have reservations but I know we belong together.”
Apolo reached for Katrina and pulled her against him. He leaned in and softly kissed her. His lips moved slowly, lightly, tasting her. God, how he missed this, he thought. Apolo wanted to deepen the kiss but resisted and gently, ending the kiss he let her go. “Now how about that run,” Apolo said smiling down at her.
Apolo started out at a slow jog. Katrina was left standing there stunned. “Come on,” Apolo yelled back, “before you can’t catch up.”
Katrina shook her head trying to grasp what was going on. She took off after him and tried to get her emotions under control. She didn’t know what to think. Part of her wanted to run back to LA and yet deep down she knew that wasn’t what she wanted at all.
Finally catching up to Apolo, Katrina fell into step with him. “Apolo, we really need to talk,” Katrina said a little breathlessly. “Not now. You aren’t going to be able to talk much at the pace I’m going to set,” Apolo told her. “I want to cover several miles before breakfast. Think you can keep up.”
Katrina shot him a look that would have sent her assistants at the office scurrying for cover. He just smiled back and started to set a pace that was just fast enough to be challenging for her.
Katrina settled in. Running was a refuge and a habit for Katrina. The steady rhythm always seemed to relax her. As she ran her mind kept going back to the same thoughts she had been having ever since Apolo walked back into her life.
Why am I here with Apolo getting ready for another Olympics? Salt Lake City was bad enough. Against her better judgment she fell in love with Apolo, knowing he was too young for her, and then he just set her aside afterward. But Torino was worse.
The first few months back together were magical. Although they had to conduct a long distance relationship, being in different cities, they spent as much time together as they could. Apolo was funny, sexy, passionate, and treated Katrina like she was everything to him.
He was still taking Allison and some other friends to different media events but Katrina knew they where only friends and wasn’t concerned about different rumors that would pop up about Apolo’s love life. In fact, even when they had to stop seeing each other as Torino drew closer and Apolo’s training became more intense, they were still phoning each other all the time and everything seemed fine.
Katrina was handling the public relations work for Apolo and several other athletes competing in Torino. She was spread thin and the big problems started when Katrina was told by her office to assist Jill, one of their other agents, with Bode Miller. He was fast becoming a public relations nightmare, what with his inappropriate comments and partying. Katrina was working with Jill to control the damage and rein him in. Apolo, of course, didn’t want her anywhere near Bode.
Apolo became insistent that she be in the stands whenever he was on the ice or whenever he was giving an interview. Of course she wanted to be there but she also had work to do.
When the photos of Bode in his RV and at the clubs partying with different women came out, Apolo started complaining that he didn’t want to be booked to any of the same events or be interviewed by the same people interviewing Bode. He kept arguing with Katrina to drop working with Bode.
As the games in Torino started, Katrina was trying to keep Apolo happy so he could concentrate on his skating. She was also trying to make her office happy. Unfortunately she was making no one happy, including herself.
Finally one day when Apolo couldn’t reach Katrina and he found out she had been at one of the skiing events in which Bode was participating, he called her office and asked that she be removed from handling his marketing.
When Katrina found out she was devastated. Apolo was avoiding her and when she finally got to talk to Apolo it was as if someone had dipped him in ice. He was stern, cold and remote. He didn’t raise his voice, he just told her he had worked his whole life to get to this point and couldn’t have anything interfering with his concentration. Their worlds didn’t work together and he was finished.
That was it. No arguing, no talking he just turned around and left her. She watched him walk away as her heart shattered. Katrina finished the work she had there in Torino in a total fog. She cried as she watched Apolo compete. When the Olympics were over and she finally got back to LA she talked to her office about a change from working directly with clients and took two weeks off. Finally alone, Katrina gave into sorrow and grief. After time Katrina got herself together. The sorrow turned to anger and she became determined not to let herself be hurt like that again.
It was easy not to get hurt again. She knew she would never find anyone who would measure up to Apolo and she was right. From then to now there was no other man who came close to capturing her heart.
