Katrina closed the door to her room and leaned back against it with her eyes shut. She could still feel Apolo’s arms around her, his soft warm breath at her ear. She felt her heartbeat racing.
Taking a few deep breaths to try and calm herself Katrina straightened up, opened her eyes and let out a gasp. There on the desk was a beautiful vase full of coral roses with a single red rose at the center. Tears sprang to her eyes as Katrina remembered the first time she received roses just like this…
After Salt Lake when Apolo told Katrina he wanted them to take a break, they rarely saw each other. They would talk regarding business and were pleasant to one another but Katrina felt like there was a wall between them. Then about a year and a half before Torino they ran into each other again at a charity ball. All the feelings they still held for one another seemed to flair again immediately. Even when Apolo was greeting and speaking with other guests, his eyes would find her. They spent most of the evening dancing or huddled together talking. He told her it was a mistake to have put their relationship on hold and how much he missed her and wanted to pick up where they had left off. The next day she had received flowers just like the roses in her room now; coral for desire and a single red for love.
Katrina collapsed onto the chair by the desk. The fragrance of the roses was making her slightly sick or was it just the thought that she was making the same mistakes all over again. They had such a nice evening together and now he had reminded her again of the past.
Katrina sat up and looked for a card among the blooms. Her hand shook slightly as she reached for the small envelope and opened it…
Love undying still flares between us
Obstacles have built walls where none should exist
Vows I give to hurdle those walls and rest
Eternally in your sweet embrace,
Always yours,
Apolo
Tears ran down Katrina’s cheeks. If only the note were true Katrina thought. How many times had he told her they would always be together? She thought she had steeled her heart against being hurt again but it hadn’t worked.
Apolo was romantic, passionate, caring and demanding all rolled into one very sexy, attractive package. Katrina also knew he was single minded when in pursuit of a goal. Katrina pulled one of the coral flowers out of the vase and ran the soft petals along her cheek. So much for just old friends, she thought.
