For those of you interested in the Canadian skaters for the fall World Cup season, I am happy to report that 4 skaters were selected today - 2 men and 2 women. Tomorrow, 4 more men and 4 more women will be chosen to participate in the fall World Cup Season.
Attention Lori ( and others )
Charles Hamelin was amazing to watch and he won all 4 events he skated in yesterday and today. He and Olivier Jean were the first 2 men who qualified. After being off ice for a whole season with a leg injury, Olivier Jean was equally amazing. They were trying out the new Olympic ice for the first time. These 2 were chosen based on the results of the 1500 meter races today and yesterday. Boy were they fast! Charles led the whole way and Olivier was close behind.
I am very sad to tell you that Amanda Overland, Kalyna Roberge, and Tania Vicent were all absent from the meet due to injury. I spoke to B.C. skater Jessica Hewitt ( I sat with both her grandmothers & cousin during the afternoon) who told me that Amanda and Kalyna would likely be out the whole fall world cup season but didn't know the extent of their injuries.
As you recall, I met them both in August and they were in excellent shape.
Jessica did very well both today and yesterday and I'm hoping she'll be named tomorrow. However, the two women selected today will be attending their first World Cup meets this season: Valerie Maltais & Marie-Andre Mendes-Campeau. I'm hoping that Jessica Hewitt and Jessica Gregg may be chosen tomorrow. They are both pretty amazing on the ice.
Just a word to those coming to the World Cup...the announcer today ( will also be at WC #2 announced in both French and English but has a very
thick French/Canadian accent and was hard to understand. I sat across from the finish line and the view is great though you are pretty high up. May want to bring binoculars! No flash photography is allowed so I only got a few pictures on my borrowed digital camera. Will see how they turn out.
Charles Hamelin's brother Francoise also skated well as did Tremblay and Monnette. In the overall rankings though it was Charles Hamelin; Olivier Jean, Rene Beaulieu, & Michael Gidday.
I return to the Pacific Coliseum tomorrow from 9 am-2 pm , where they will battle for the remaining 4 male and 4 female spots on the team.
Finals in the 500 and the 1000 and relays are scheduled.
This was my first taste of live short track speed skating competition. Wow! It sure beats watching Chinese tv on the computer.
Will try to check in tomorrow night to recap the final day.
