The opening ceremonies were pretty spectacular, I agree.
Rafael is looking really good and it looks like Phelps is off to a great start already. I don't know how much I'll follow as I'm more of a winter sport follower. Regardless, it's all pretty exciting.
Sad though that it was marred by tragedy.

Thanks for the article about our sabre fencers, Mtnme. Love the sweep! I used to watch this sport when I was in college. I always admired the fencers. Gold medal winner Mariel Zagunis: Gold medalist Mariel Zagunis, right, silver medalist Sada Jacobson, left.

Thanks Mtnme for the article about the fencers and Susie for the pics.
I saw the prelims for swimming earlier today and Michael Phelps was looking really good.

I love medal ceremonies too. Too bad that they messed up with the national anthem.
Dara Torres looked awesome in the pool in the relay finals.

^^^She is definitely kicking butt! She almost caught up to the Netherlands at the end of the race. She pulled the USA from third into second, so they won the silver medal.

I'm watching all I can. Currently engrossed in the China/USA mens BB game. holy crow.. it's so exciting. I love Yao Ming and all he's done for his homeland. I was thrilled to see a little of the opening dressage comp and some swimming and fencing. There are not enough hours in the day. My dear friend Deb is in Bejing with her brother Doug Beal who is the former men's VB coach. I am sure they are devastated by the tragedy there but the teams are carrying through.

I was watching all the swimming pre-lims today. I didn't get to watch the b-ball game because I was at church, but I am estatic that they won.

Dara is such an inspiration, especially in a society that often insinuates that women are disposable after the age of 30. (...was I the only one who caught the 'male' commentary on friday night about the Olympic athlete from some European country whose 'prize' for being a gold medal winner is to date a young model ? - - - uggh) Give me Dara's athletic, middle aged, hard body ANY day!!! ;D ;D ;D ....now if you'll excuse me, I think I gotta get to the gym!

Woohoo another gold medal for Michael Phelps, and what a way to win it. That was a great race for the USA relay team.

The men's 4 X 100 swimming relay - Holy Mother of God! The commentator gave up on our guys -- I never did. I watched the last turn like a hawk and started yelling, "fight! Fight!! FIGHT!!!" during the last lap. And oh, my goodness, our swimmer did just that! Yeaowzaa! ;D Our gorgeous guys!
