ETA: I just got my first DSLR as well! (...a Nikon D40.) I have to admit that the first time I looked at it I had no clue as to where to start, LOL. I'm going to take some classes this summer and get my big brother to help me out -- he's an accomplished amateur photographer. Susie, the D40 was the other camera I looked at. If you and I take some classes, and then we meet up with Lily at a meet, we can get even more pointers from her and should end up with some darn good footage! I wish we were local to each other so we could have our own "how to shoot short-track" course!

Aaosmts19 and Susie... wouldn't it be fun to get together before a racing event (somewhere) and have a little *photograply 101* session!!! I was telling Susie that I inherited many of my brother's Nikon zoom lenses, which are interchangeable with the D40... maybe I should buy this camera, to be able to use his powerful lenses! Yikes~

Aaosmts, I am so glad you had such a fantastic trip and that you've returned safely! I'm really amazed at how open Allison was, telling you about her life even before you really clarified that you knew who she was. I sure hope all this short track effort is worth it for her! And thanks for the further details about the training and the camraderie. I can't believe no one has commented on this sentence: "When they are done, while they are still in the heat box at the rink, they take down the top half of the skinsuit and throw a shirt on". Newbie, I appreciated your heartfelt post about the purity and power of amateur/Olympic sports. Well said!

Thank you aaosmts19 for sharing all of your wonderful experiences.
I know what you mean about not being able to share the excitement with your family. That is one reason why I cherish this site the way I do. Coming to this web site is the first thing I do in the morning and the first thing I do when I get home from work!!!
Reading your post this morning made me really have to hurry to get ready for work but it was so worth it.

It was strange that, because I was travelling alone, I didn't have anyone to be exited with. Calling someone back home about it just didn't have the same anticipation as sharing it with you guys. Any of my personal friends or family would have thought I was crazy....it's only thru the internet that I've found you wonderful people who can share the excitement. After I had I met Apolo, I turned and walked out the doors into the rain, and it was just like "what just happened here?"? There was no one to jump up and down with, high five, say "can you believe it" to..... Oh man - why didn't I send you my cell number? You can call me anytime to share. If we had just thought ahead I know there are several of us that would have been ecstatic to share this moment with you via phone. We would have been jumping up and down and screaming together. Just several hundred miles apart!!

aaosmts19,
Sometimes people in our every day world don't understand, wich makes it so great to have a place like this to share your excitement. You did a great job of reporting!

I dublicate what Wags said! I would love to give you my number and you could call me anytime you meet Apolo. I know what you mean, my parents don't understand my obsession. My best friend didn't even care, really. But we got such a sweet place like this.

I'm going to have to find some fast-action subjects to practice on this summer. Hmmm...

I was pm-ing her like crazy the few days before my trip, and when I was in SLC trying to figure out camera settings. I think I may have gotten some pretty good action shots of the Aerial Ski Team landing in the pool at Park city. When I get a chance to load the camera software onto my laptop and download the pics, I'll post a few in Unapolo-related thread. You know it was a good vacation when you are 2 days back into work and still feel mellow!

I'd love to see those pics of the Aerial Ski Team! ;D ;D Now I wish we had taken a road trip to see that, as well as Apolo and his team members!

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D !!! SHOWTIME!!!!!! SHOWTIME!!!!!! SHOWTIME!!!!!! SHOWTIME!!!!!! SHOWTIME!!!!!! SHOWTIME!!!!!! SHOWTIME!!! Remember that the camera is new for me...not necessarily great quality, but heh, when you're in a drought, you'll drink anything. Arriving at the rink the first day...The Ohno-mobile.... The local SLC speedskating club had the ice from 7:30 am - 9:00...here's one of our Rockerfund skate extraordinaires, Anthony Barthell. Did I say I was up this early on my VACATION? This is a really bad shot, but let's instead call it an artsy-fartsy shot. I took it from the stands while the local SLC Skating Club was on the ice. This is the US team warming up at the bikes and track before their ice time...about 8:30 am. Coach Larry...this may have been my demise, when I got reported to Kori..."who's that gal taking pictures?" Heading over to the rink as the US team dressed for training Allison showed up first... Then THE MAN arrived.... Simon, Shani, Jeff and Apolo getting ready Go SHANI! ... woo-hoo! Alas, this is when I got shut down, so no more pix.... The Oval from my hotel room; you can (just barely) see the white, vertical beams rising in the distance, just over the top of the Cracker Barrell sign. It had its own special night lighting which could be seen at night (obviously, since it was NIGHT ligthing!). You know how rock groups on tour will name the tour? Like Josh Groban just finished his "Awake" tour....well, this vacation was my "Lawnchair" tour. I bought a $9.99 lawnchair, threw it in the trunk of the car, and pulled off the side of the road whenever I wanted. This is on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. Wish the depth perception was better. The road is further down than it looks...and the flatness of the receding lake. It was about 8 miles to the other side of the Lake. Road to nowhere on Antelope... exactly as this vacation was meant to be.... Will try to get the Aerial Ski team shots tomorrow night.

Woah! This was a VERY pleasant surprise to see in the thread tonight! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That quenched my thirst in the 'drought' LoL!!!! You rock aaosmts19! You took some amazing shots! Okay, you definitely need to come in October now...sorry you got shut down, but the pics you did get are nice! K to you for those and the trouble it went to to get. PS Is "The Man" in the team pic on the bikes (4th from left, looks like a bandana head)?! Cool! I like that pic...just their sillhouettes sorta! And I love the lawn chair one too! Keep the pics coming from your trip!
