To a beautiful black medium hair male cat named Jack Daniels we rescued from our shelter. He had been there for 5 months then they displayed him at Petco and yesterday when I went to get Daryl our springer spaniel groomed-I love his groomer she did an incredible job and was so friendly. He was pretty friendly at first but has been hiding under Natalie's bed for 4 hours.Any good cat advice is greatly appreciated I haven't had a cat since I was 7 and I am a little rusty. We have a dog too and he batted his paw at him thru the sliding door and Daryl barked .They have pretty much ignored each other since. Are there warning signs to watch for that may say they don't get along?I have so many questions. Lastly I want to apologize for being MIA we have all been horribly sick with a nasty respiratory bug going around.

I have plenty of cats. I have a medium sized dog, Jacques, who is part chow. He chases the many cats, who don't like it much. One of the older ones, whom is declawed (poor baby) jumped on his back. I missed it of course. He don't mess with her much. Missy, I'd say give it a little time. New place, a dog, new people. Cats are playful. Get a string and try and get the little feller to open up some. It may work. I have a cat who still hides, but is the sweetest thing. She had a tough going before coming to us. Sorry so long! I adore animals. Hope I helped in some way... EDIT: May every one feel better soon. We all got sick with sinus infections. Mine being the tamest. Then again I'm used to them.

he just came and sat on my shoulders I kicked the dog outside but it is those moments when he runs after the cat that scare me.It took the kids going to bed for Jack to feel safe.I don't know if he has even used the litter box yet although I hope he won't spray he is fixed.I feel like I need to read cats for dummies.thanks for answering the question I just have been letting him explore but I will have to let the dog in for the night so he doesn't bark all night.

it is scary for a bigger dog to chase after a cat. and cats usually don't spray after being fixed. at least mine didn't. it may take time for the two to 'respect' one another and leave each other alone. it took a while for my dog too. speaking of new members of the family. they brought a new horse out here. she's a beauty. she's black with white on her. she and 'sweetie' had a kicking match. ouch. the new ones always get picked on.

How wonderful, Daisymomma! I think that it's pretty normal for a new resident cat to hide under the bed for a while. Some people keep two animals apart for a period of time while they get used to each other's smell. Tell the kids to sit or lie down on the floor and let Jack come to them. It will also help if you have the kids feed Jack. Most cats are great about using litter boxes. If you use plastic litter box liners, it will make life much easier for you. Get a good scratching post and some toys. Cats love large feathers, and the type of interactive toy that you dangle in front of them, so that they can chase it. They will also like a brown paper grocery bag laid on the floor on its side, a box that they can leap into, and some tented newspapers (if you are in the mood to play! Don't bother with a cat bed, Jack will probably end up sleeping with one of the kids. Have fun with him and get a photo to us!

Awwww, that's so sweet Daisy. I love cats, and dogs too. I'm sure your dog and cat will become the best of friends, just give it a little time. And please share a pic with us when you get around to it.

Awh, congrats, Daisy!! I had a dog and a cat at the same time. So it just takes time. After a while they just learn to hate each other and I'm not gonna lie, they will fight each other from time to time you just have to yell at them. I wish you lots of luck girl and maybe show a pic? btw, Butterfly! I love your little pics of David Cook winning.
