I'm sorry that you removed your initial post. There was nothing offensive or disrespectful about it, you saw what was for you some similarities in two very talented people and you are more than welcome and have the right to voice your opinions. As you stated, you may not post here often, but I'm appalled that someone made you feel bullied into removing it. I think you'll find the majority of us find that behavior offensive - and untolerated. 2010orbust...I've been out-of-town this weekend and I'm now just *catching up* here. I, too, am sorry you removed your original post. I would've enjoyed reading it, I'm sure. I don't watch AI on a regular basis, but David Archuleta has certainly gotten my attention! He's extremely talented (musically) for his young years, just as Apolo was (and still is, of course!) during his teen years. Bravo! ;D

We’re obviously a diverse fan base. I think that perhaps I should have used the “introduce yourself” area before posting and warned you that I’m probably older than many of you and can come up with some pretty oddball reflections at times. This makes me a fun dinner guest if nothing else. My background and education is in electrical engineering and I’ve been lucky enough to see all kinds of countries and cultures through work. My sister, a microbiologist and 5 years older, started talking to me about this super speed skater back in 2002. She has attended his competitions all along and next time I’ll join her in 2010. The more I’ve looked at this guy…his background, maturity, ethics, achievements and societal contributions…..the more I’ve been drawn to keep looking. I’ve come to care about what happens to him. Apolo has a special “something” beyond raw talent that appeals mightily across the board. What that “something” is intrigues me because it’s a strong pull. There is something that enables a young kid to rise above others in the first place (talent, strong faith, highly involved fathers, maturity, etc.) and then there is something else within us that accepts them (drawn to humility, a clean healthy look, youth, innocence, vulnerability, great achievement, overcoming obstacles, etc.). I will finally add that comparing commonalities is not equating individuals. Only Apolo is Apolo. Thanks for the nice notes. Hi 2010orbust! Welcome! I hope that you keep posting here. I did see your original post, and while I'm not sure that I entirely agree with it, I did see where you were going, and I do feel that there are points of comparison between the two young prodigies (one current, one former.) This last weekend, I was comparing "Big Brown" to Apolo, LOL! I think that BB is the "Apolo" of racehorces! (He's got that sudden, swooping burst of speed that leaves you wondering, "Where the heck did that come from?") So I'm not exactly in position to complain about an Archuleta comparison! I hope that you won't wait until 2010, however. See Apolo skate now! He'll be in Salt Lake City and Vancouver for World Cups in the early fall, take your pick...or St. Louis in December for Nationals. You won't regret coming, I promise! You would be surprised at the number of older fans in the fan base...you're not alone, far from it. Apolo's fanbase is really diverse, as you've observed, and there are people from all walks of life, including many professionals such as yourself. Keep those original thoughts coming!

I missed the original post, what was the comparison of Apolo and David Archuleta? Their looks, personality, height, shoe size...?

I think there are some strong similarities. Both are gifted in very special ways, are genuine and dedicated to their craft. David always talks about doing his very best and hoping that will be enough for his fans. I know that watching both of them brings me joy... it's a real charge. I'm hoping that those of you who love and admire David will vote for him tonite. I like David Cook in many ways, but the kid stole my heart. I work in a nifty high school and I see about 500 just like him roaming the halls every day. Goofy, funny, ...talented kids so I know how difficult this has been for him. He knows exactly why he was put here, as does Apolo. Personally it's been great just to watch them evolve.

These are some of the similarities I see/feel regarding Apolo as a late teen and Archuleta. I don't have the original list..
Boyish good looks and big, heartwarming smile. A vulnerability/sweetness/innocence. A “differentness” and maturity beyond years. Mental toughness. Consistent performance under tremendous pressure. Strong personal faith. Very strong father involvement/relationship. Exceptional raw talent that would be hard to find, manufacture or duplicate. Youthful (and perhaps social) sacrifice. Good sportsmanship. Mixed ethnicity and an interest in both cultural sides. Good boy images, non-Hollywood “glitterati”.
Some of these characteristics draw me in to begin with. I like people who are a bit different, and I love to see exceptional talent. Besides all that, Apolo is highly principled, sharp, kind to others, and generous....those are the things that make me a lifelong fan.

Not the greatest picture of Archuleta, but when I first saw this thread (which has been very interesting, by the way)... I thought it might be a photo comparison...
