I'm just wondering why my virus protection didn't catch it. I have Norton Antivirus (Symantec). I still don't know if it was the virus. tdav...is your Symantec up to date with the lastest virus defintions? When was the last time it did a scan of your system?

Hey guys--just want to post an update of this problem. There was something definitely wrong with the news script. I couldn't log in for the longest time (was trying to delete the China video, because that's the only video on the main page, albeit just a link). I was very confuzzled for the longest time as to what would have been causing the problem, but after a long time of trying to fix the news script I was able to log in and delete the post. This is also very strange since that video link has been there since March, but it is possible that the link is corrupted somehow. The only thing that seems to make sense is that the news script was hacked (there are definitely some weird things happening in there, but I have had it for years). The other possible reason could be, as Mellie said, that there was a virus in one of the Google links. I have no way to control that, unfortunately.
Since I was all busy graduatin' and stuff... I don't know if this is an ongoing problem or not. Are people still having problems or are their virus scanners popping up when accessing the page? I have been on it many times (I have Norton, and it's updated) and nothing happens for me. Any updates as to what people are experiencing would help me diagnose the problem (or tell if I've fixed it yet). Thanks!

Hey Lindsey, I thought you might want to know that my anti-virus popped up again saying that it got rid of the virus when I went to the main page a few seconds ago. I went to the main page on Tuesday, and my anit-virus did not mention anything, but it did tonight.

Update on yahoo news, we at GA are not alone! lol here is the link to read up more on the outbreak of trojan horses and some links.
tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/92638
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fake, infected media file attacks half a million victims in a week Sun May 11, 2008 1:52PM EDT See Comments (98) Buzz up!on Yahoo! In what's being called the largest fake media file outbreak in three years, some 500,000 people have fallen prey to a phony music or video track that is actually a spyware-infested Trojan horse. Usually purporting to be a music track with an MP3 file extension (in this case, an MP3 track from the UK group Girls Aloud), the file is actually an installer that claims to require a special codec and a special media player to play back the file. Install the codec and what you really get is a computer screen full of pop-ups delivered through a variety of malware programs. You can see what the infection process looks like by checking out the video on this post. The attack is being distributed primarily through peer-to-peer networks. This is hardly an original attack, but the scale is immense: Those 500,000 attacks occurred in the space of just one week. That's substantial. The bright spot is that according to McAfee, which provided the data in the BBC report, only about 10 percent of those who downloaded the infected file actually installed it. The infected file incorporates all manner of potential file names. Though the BBC story includes a half-dozen, the real list of names is exhaustive to the point where it would make little sense including it here. It's likely that that list will continue to grow, too, as the attack continues to develop. You already know what you need to do now, but I'll say it again: Update your antivirus software, make sure it's running real-time scans, and keep off those peer-to-peer networks.

Hmmm.... Mellie's comment and your news story, Mtnme, makes me think it must be a problem with Google. Those links are on a randomizer--so when it showed up one time and not the other, that means it's something not on my page itself (because nothing changes with my site except for the top banner picture, each time it's loaded). I should probably contact them and see what they can do about it.

Boo! I have been working so hard to alleviate this problem. I really can't figure it out. I completely re-installed my news script (that in itself was horrendous), but I definitely knew something was wrong since it looked like it was hacked--errors everywhere and I couldn't even log in properly. But I fixed it! After hours of searching forums for solutions... My gallery was also SEVERELY messed up (only one album/pic per page) and I seem to have fixed that from the admin level but may re-install it as well. I wish my virus scanner would catch it so I could see exactly what it is saying.

Lindsey - So sorry you're having to go through all this just so we can feed our addiction. I can't even begin to imagine what's involved in keeping this site up and running well. I'm just so happy there are people like you so people like me can just sit back and reap the rewards of all your hard work. Thanks!!!

Thanks to Number1's help with the URL that was causing the problem, I narrowed down the attack to the photo gallery. I updated with a security fix (it had attacked NUMEROUS people who were using that script), and everything appears to be fine now. In the process, I lost my whole gallery set-up, so I'm having to re-upload everything. But it gave me a good chance to reorganize a tad, and I made/modified a theme so it looks more site integrated now. So I just wanted to let everyone know that the gallery is in the process of being fixed. Some of the forum emoties were stored there so I have to reorganize those as well. But it's all happening as fast as I can get to it. I've spent hours on this, seriously! But I think it's going to be bigger and better than ever. Please let me know if you have any more problems with the main site. I feel like I have eradicated it, but it was proported to have infected all php files on the server, not just the gallery files, so I may not have gotten everything. Thanks for being patient throughout all of this!!

Thanks Lindsey!! Take your time, I really don't mind and don't feel bad. I am studying Graphic design and building a website and keeping it up is sooooo hard. I look up to you for doing this I couldn't have done it myself.

Lindsey, I'm so sorry you have to put so much work into correcting something that really shouldn't happen anyway. I love this site. Thank you for all your hard work.

I don't know if this virus is the cause, but whatever it is or was, it completely crashed my computer. I've got to get a whole new motherboard for my laptop and that's going to cost like $300, and not counting the labor! I'm suing you, Lindsey!

Hmm...I'm really sorry that happened, tdav. I don't really know what else I could have done...? Maybe you had better sue Coppermine, though. It was out of my control, really, until I knew from Number1 where it was coming from and then I worked night and day to fix the problem. My virus scanner didn't show anything at all, so I just had nothing to work with (all reports from the gallery support forums said that it only could be spread by someone installing it, so that's probably why it didn't show up for me). I do this site for free, so I'm not sure where I'd get $300+ dollars...
