From time to time we've come across Andrew's blog, "Zen and the Art of Speedskating" at andrewlove.org/blog.
Andrew's a speed skater living in Utah and training at the Oval. What I love about his blog is the passion that he shares for what's important in life, the insight into the world of speed skating and the dedicated people who love it, support it and do it.
I've been following the blog for most of the winter and have learned alot about the world of speed skating, the various age groups, worldwide competitions, and the people in the crazy sport. Reading his blog offers a real travelogue of international skating venues, whether on frozen ponds and rivers, outdoor ovals or the ultimate in state-of-the-art indoor ovals.
From time to time I've pointed out a recent and interesting tidbit.
Well I just happened across this one this morning as I had my tea and woke up to the world.
His video to "Hear Comes the Sun" recaps the last event of the season at the Olympic Oval. It made me think of all the OZ'ers and GA'ers who met this last year out at SLC. I thought of you and wanted to make sure you saw this....
It really sums up the whole speed skating scene.... Andrewlove.org/blog
Enjoy!

What a great video! I love Andrew's blog. And I nearly lost it when one of the skaters pulled out a laminated picture of what looked like maybe his parents out of the back of his skinsuit and showed us. So sweet. All of these athletes are so inspiring.
Thank you aaosmts19 for the head's up!

Here's an opportunity to help get get a female speed skater, Sheila Young Ochowicz, into the Olympic Hall of Fame. A short bio and pic appears on Andrew's main page, but here's a quick exerpt. URL for voting below...voting ends today! URL has a nice video of her career.... ----------------- 2 time Olympian, and multiple US national sprint champ Elli Ochowicz just sent me an email worth re-posting here. Elli writes: My mom has just been nominated for the Olympic Hall of Fame and I am trying to get the word out. Go to www.usolympichalloffame.com/?page_id=28 and vote for her. I was wondering if it you might be willing to make a post on your site about this. I know this would help her get some serious exposure so if you are willing it would really mean a lot. The voting is from now through Friday, March 28. Anyone can go to this website and place a vote..

Interesting post on ZATAOSS (Zen and the Art of Speedskating), andrewlove.org/blog. Video provided to ANdrew by an American living in Korea; some insight into how speed skating and the Olympics are perceived, including a video and commentary.

Good morning, all...
Andrew's latest blog is referencing this quote by Apolo at his recent speech in Arkansas. He then invites comments. Jump into his blog if you have thoughts!
“I believe sports is one of the best places you can learn about yourself,” Ohno said. “Sports puts you head-to-head with the demons you face, and you have to deal with it — right then and there.”

As many of you know from the "My Trip to SLC" thread, I met up with Andrew last week for a gab session. One of the questions I asked him was "what was your biggest disappointment and how did you deal with it"? Later we exchanged emails of the mutual-admiration-society type and he included these 2 pointers from his blog, about how he dealt with missing the World Cup team by .1 second. Excerpt from the email: -------------------------------------------------------------- again, I had a blast, you are an absolutely lovely person, and I am going to have to do something about the description of you & those 250 other people at their computer screens during the short track finals. that is an absolutely wild thought.. I was talking with you about the time I missed the world cup... and that is one of the few entries I really had to force myself to write.. usually, doing this is an absolute joy... here is the first race... andrewlove.org/blog/?p=330and here is the one after I failed.. failure can make great literature.. even though it's no fun to experience... andrewlove.org/blog/?p=331I hope our paths cross sometime soon, the rocker fund is definately worth a blog post... --------------------------------------------

Yesterday's entry was about a bike race that Andrew participated in, but the story is about Ryan Bedford and his amazing capacity for short track, long track and cycling. Ryan was in the race, too. Good shots of Ryan in the story... Ryan won the field sprint, 3rd place overall. A few things I thought of when reading this: 1) short track is training 6 days a week...and this is what this guy does on his day off? 2) I never put 2 + 2 together to realize that Ryan is a cross-over to LT this past year. Check out his 2008 accomplishments: 2008-2009 Short Track/ Long Track National Team Member 2008 World Ranking 1500 meter - 10th (Short Track) 2008 North American Short Track Champion 2008 National Short Track Champion 2008 World Cup Team Member (Long Track) 2008 World Cup Team Member (Short Track) 2007-2008 U.S. Short Track National Team Member 3) It occurs to me that, in my SLC trip comments, I mentioned someone skating with a "D" on his helmet....it was Ryan!
