I've been thinking about that - the sexiness when he's walking down the hall, eluding the officials and smiling - and some other similar stuff. It's that James Dean type of nonchalance, I think. There's a scene during dwts when Julianne is sorta fake mad at him and takes a punch at him and kicks him, and he just keeps slowly sauntering towards the mirror with this unconcerned look on his face. That tough silent-type thing going on - and it's not like Apolo, generally - he's usually very present to other people, eyes wide open and looking into their eyes, very receptive, so when he goes "too cool for school" it's just that much MORE sexy than the guys who act like that all the time. Well, I don't know if that made sense.... You know, I'm forever being surprised by Apolo. He has so many sides to him - the strong silent-side, the romantic open-eyed vulnerable side, the silly goofy side, the stoic self-torturing side, the gentle sentimental side (seems like that comes out around children), the serious businessman side, the philosophical Zen sort of side, the Hollywood side, the glam-boy side w/the clothes and the Rolex etc., the confrontational side (rarish but I think he keeps a lid on it but I think it's there from little snippets I've read), who knows how many more? The Gemini in him? Or maybe just his astronomical IQ - it's gotta be way on up there. This is such a great post, elsa! ITA with you! Apolo does have so many different sides and he is showing more of them more often nowadays, I think. Maybe that is why he fascinates me so. That, and because he SO HOT!

Apolo does have so many different sides and he is showing more of them more often nowadays, I think. Maybe that is why he fascinates me so. That, and because he SO HOT! Thanks, callie. You know, it's one of the first things I noticed about him - and at first, I noticed his VOICE being so different from one time to the next. Sometimes sensitive and thoughtful and deep (like the NBC '06 interviews in that church, of all things - I think he's sitting in a pew and you can see a stained glass window in the background.) Then, you see him kinda tense, speaking very quickly in a real cute but like utterly different way with that Eric Johnson guy in the KOMO interview when he's trying to dodge dancing with the guy - or worried about its implications (well, I know he wasn't but it was funny to watch him "hedge" and esp. cute when he got viscerally disgusted and slapped Eric's hand off his shoulder, and then he took a gulp, and let him put his hand back on his shoulder (while Apolo shuddered a little bit) - BWAH! Then he goes really hilarious -- like his voice "we were nose to nose" with Julianne in a rehearsal. And when he talks about the old ladies telling Yuki "Oh you're son has grown so much" - he's just a doll mimicking their high squeaky voices. He's quite a mimic -- well, not just that -- but his voice is another way he shows the multiplicity of sides that he has. It's like he's so extraordinarily versatile -- he can think of something 1000 different ways, he looks at things from every angle, he embodies so many different things -- like he said once, he has so many interests. Hey, no kiddin' -- I'll bet it's related to why he's so good at short track. His mind is faster than everybody else's - he sees so many opportunities that other people are too slow/dense to see - his mind is running at higher RPMs than 99.9% of the rest of us... I just thought of another of Apolo's sides, another surprising one -- the extremely calculating and strategic side. I often think back to Allison's comments when Apolo was researching a '64 Cadillac and she said he'll take FOREVER checking on that because he does everything that way. It surprised me -- heck, what doesn't surprise me about him? He's so careful. Also, coach John said that of all his athletes, it's Apolo who immediately understands whatever new exercise/diet concepts John's come up with, while his other athletes struggle to understand. In a nutshell, he's just brilliant! It comes out so many ways, and I can't wait to see what he'll do next! I mean, sure he's drop-dead beautiful, but there's more to this guy. He's deep. And that's rare in pretty-boys - I guess because they usually don't have to develop their mind/character -- or maybe just because that level is so rare in itself that combined with great beauty is many times more rare. So fitting that he was named after a Greek god

I would love to see his confrontational side. Am I being weird, cause that seems kind of weird.

I'd love to see that side too, tdavis. He talks about it in his autobiography when he's talking about his girlfriend (2002):
"...She has a fiery personality and is her own person. If anyone confronts her, she fights back (a lot like me). She's the strongest person I've ever met in my life, and she helps me understand myself. Maybe because I didn't have a mother, she shows me a different side of life and I admire her...."
Awwww.

I read and interview last night (2001) and he was asked that his first name isn't exactly common and if anyone ever made fun of it, and Apolo said "No! I made sure of that." ;D I wonder how?

I remember that interview and I giggled when I read that part of it. It made me want him to elaborate on it a bit... I can't really imagine Apolo being confrontational, but really would LOVE to see it. I think, if aything, he avoids confrontations by using his charm and wins people over by his desire to understand their point of view and why they themselves may be feeling confrontational. I can see this moreso than him just getting in your face and making sure you know who's boss. Kind of a 'let's come to an understanding' strategy. Im sure there have been times where this hasn't worked and he had to pull out a can of whooparse, and boy would I have loved to have seen that!

I remember the incident in this video (Apolo being late for the race), but when it happened it was just another Olympic Moment for me, among many. It wasn't till Apolo's final race and post-race interviews and clips that it hit me like a ton of bricks that this guy was really special. The announcer in this video referred to 'maturity beyond his years'. That's what grabbed me on those last couple of days in Torino. His looks had gone right over my head for 2 Olympics, but when I finally took notice of his poise and maturity, everything else about him kind of came into hyperfocus.
But by then all his prior Olympics stuff had gone to DVR heaven - it was great to be able to see this clip again with new eyes. Thanks, Billiey.
Elsa, you mentioned an NBC '06 interview in a church? Do you have a link to that - I don't believe I've seen it.

I would love to see his confrontational side. Am I being weird, cause that seems kind of weird. If that's weird, then I'm weird, too, because I'd love to see it also. This video is the closest to it that I have seen. And I had the same reaction to the "No, I made sure of that" response. And elsa, I LOVE all the information you have about Apolo and short-track! Do you have links or can you tell me where to find these two? And when he talks about the old ladies telling Yuki "Oh you're son has grown so much" - he's just a doll mimicking their high squeaky voices.I often think back to Allison's comments when Apolo was researching a '64 Cadillac and she said he'll take FOREVER checking on that because he does everything that way.

Ooooh callie -- I'm pretty sure I downloaded the clip that has him talking like an old lady -- he says they come to Yuki's studio, maybe his clients, and say that to him about Apolo. I'm thinking it was an interview with one of the Seattle news channels - seems like he was outside talking to the reporter The other one was in an article and that could take me days! lol But I'll go look for you ... I'm so disorganized! Maybe somebody here will come to the rescue! elsa

Lori, there were 7 of those church videos (NBC interviews associated with Torino I believe) and I could swear I got them from HERE before things were changed up a bit. I wonder if Christy or Lindsey or Bella know where to find them. The titles: ShortTrackisWar LookingBack LoveSkating Onthe1000m PressuretoRepeat SilverMedal TheBest They're like my all-time favorites of his interviews because the camera is so close to his face and he's just more open and vulnerable than usual. And unbelievably BEAUTIFUL! If they can't be found, maybe somebody could explain to me how to use Megaupload or something like that because I have them saved on my computer. I would have to wait for hubby to help though - maybe he could this weekend. But I *know* these things are on the 'net because it was only a few weeks ago that I got them. elsa

Then he raises his voice and says, "Do this! Do that!" It's real quick but it's there. elsa

On the confrontational side, I swear I read this somewhere -- I'm thinking it was a comment at OZ back a few years and that would take like forevah to find. And I don't know if the person was kidding or exaggerating -- but somebody said that Rusty Smith got a little hard to deal with for a while, and once Apolo made him eat sawdust or dirt or something with a headlock And they worked through all that -- or rather, Rusty straightened up and quit being a stubborn donkey (I chose that word rather than the one I could have chosen -- and they're still good friends -- Rusty was at at least one of the dwts tapings. Now that sounds exteme, but I know they've been friends and training together since Apolo wrote his autobiography way back when he was 19 or whatever, so I guess it's possible some kind of confrontation took place -- a physical one ?? There are so many more knowledgeable people than me around here -- anybody ever hear about that? Oh - and does anybody know why Rusty quit training at Colorado Springs and instead moved to and trained in Los Angeles? Maybe it was back when Apolo was thinking of going to Calgary to train like Shani did. And I was watching some set of Nationals, I think 2005 and Andy Graber was hosting it -- Rusty got mad when he was disqualified in a race and he refused to race in the next one! Which meant he wouldn't make the team and go to World Championships and Andy was talking about how foolish he was being. And speaking of moving to LA or Canada, I think another example of Apolo being conrrontational is with the management or coaching staff of speedskating. He's spearheaded efforts to reform them, with letters (and Lord only knows what he's done fussing at them behind the scenes.) He was real up-front about criticizing Susan Ellis in his book and her wrong-headed methods (at least they were wrong for him.) I think he's HAD to be tough and stand up for himself and the other skaters -- as he's put it, he almost single-handedly has to find new coaches and deal with the political issues because he's the only skater who has the clout to do it. He's pretty up-front when he says stuff like that, and why not, it's TRUE! But he says it's a strain and takes a toll on him, having to worry about that side of things as well as his training and racing and PR, etc. etc. At least he has Yuki. Hey, LOVE the new icons !!! elsa

Several of the ones you mentioned are here: gotapolo.com/video_olympics.htmlIf it helps, you can mouse over the images and see the links to the files in the status bar at the bottom (of most browsers, I think). The names will be similar to the ones you posted ^^ Elsa, have I mentioned how much I love your informative posts! I'd never thought about all that political stuff with Apolo having to find coaches, etc. I bet it really does put a strain on him. I think it's really wonderful, though, how he puts SO much effort into his sport...and not just bettering himself--he wants to better his sport! Like, how many basketball players do you know that go out there and say, "Don't focus on me, focus on my SPORT--just so it can get more recognition"?? I Apolo!
