OK, last one for tonight. I love the reaction from Lee Seung-Hoon! Photo Reuters Pictures. Was I imagining things or did these two have some kind of verbal exchange during the last lap? I thought I saw Apolo turn quickly and say something to Lee. Apolo didn't look happy. I'm wondering if Lee was trying to protest that Apolo cut him off... like Apolo did in the Olympics (2002?) to get the official's attention. As someone said, Apolo skated a "scrappy" race to keep Lee from passing. What a nail-biting race and a well-earned victory! Thanks, #1, skaterwaltz, doonick, tina, and anyone else I forgot, for all the pictures and links. Makes me a feel a little bit like I was there. ;D

In case anyone wants to see Apolo's 1000m winning race again, it can be found here: web.wcsn.com/video/index.jspClick on the ISU: Salt Lake City - Day 2 link. You'll have to log in. Then, the race is at 2:45. (There's a 30 second ad before the video from Sunday loads.)

Lee reacted this way when Apolo reached back with his hand and made contact with his face. But I heard the American commentators call it a defensive move, nothing to worry about, and I think so too. Apolo was just reaching back to make sure Lee didn't get too close and hit his skates or try a move that might make both of them fall or be disqualified. You also said Apolo cross-tracked. I didn't see it. But I still don't fully understand cross-tracking. What is that exactly? Can someone who knows explain what it involves? Thanks.

Apolo had been in the lead for several laps. Lee tried to get around him going into the corner and didn't make it, so he did the above like he had been cut off. Nice try bud, but I don't think so! The refs fortunately didn't buy it either. Apparently from what I've read, the Koreans strategy has more to it than just passing technique. (I just read recently, that one of the skaters used to sneakily grab at a skaters boot in front of him, getting him off balance - and probably sending him into the wall. Not a good idea at the speeds they are going - not only sneaky- but dangerous) I'll write more tonight. I'm in an actual office now, so can't come on and off as I please.

Can you believe Lee?! He's so, "Take yo pic, gurl," and workin it. the other Korean looks to be in his mid thirties. Which is strange because the rest of the team looks about 14.
Yes, alas, my Canookian went down. Buuut he managed to yank a banner off the wall in the process, so strong work there.

The refs fortunately didn't buy it either. I didn't mean that I thought Apolo actually cut off Lee, just that Lee reacted as if Apolo did in hopes of getting a DQ called. I couldn't see the flow of the race; my DSL only gave me snapshots of the race rather than a streaming video. But the commentators seemed to think Apolo's hand accidentally touched Lee in the course of a natural swing. I didn't know when Lee did that "hey" move, so thanks for clearing that up, mntme. Breeze, I don't really understand cross-tracking either, but the commentators mentioned that Apolo swung wide and then came back in tight to keep Lee from passing outside or inside, and that such a move COULD be called as cross-tracking. However, they didn't think it would be, and it wasn't. So, that's all I know!

Gripped it and ripped it. Graceful landing, as usual. In the vid Lee popped right back up like a Weeble, I was super impressed.

I have to say Ruff, I can really see how you are so sweet on the Canadians. Incredible skaters, a formidable team- and all of them gorgeous. They were ALL pretty easy on the eyes. We rooted for them loudly - as long as there wasn't an American in the race. As a result- (Everyone there can attest to this) I actually just about lost my voice. I can barely speak audibly- Like I have a force 10 case of larangitis. It's no better today. mmmm, I hope it comes back eventually!
