Whoa - what a gorgeous picture!! Do you know if it's from that 2002 celebrity athlete competition in Jamaica? Apolo won the 50-yard swimming race and the bike race parts.

I think Apolokitty was an Apolo fansite back in 2002...don't think it exists anymore.

I'm pretty sure you're right, Elsa--I couldn't remember what this competition was called or where it took place, but I think the one you're referring to is the only one Apolo has participated in that was televised (you can tell someone actually took a pic of the screen). ApoloKitty was one of those fledgling sites back in 2002. After the Olympics, there were BAZILLIONS of Apolo fan pages on the net, but most bit the dust eventually. This might be interesting topic to discuss on the general board...?

I got details about the Met-Rx because Apolo wrote about it in his autobiography. He missed his original flight and had to travel 17 hours straight to get there. Other competitors included Olympians Bode Miller (slalom skier), Jim Shea (skeleton), and Jonny Moseley (moguls freestyle skiing) - competing against NFL football players (Jeff Garcia, LaVar Arrington, Troy Brown) and welterweight boxing champion Shane Moseley.
There were 10 events (swimming, kayaking, basketball shoot-out, weight lifting, half-mile run, cycling, rock climbing, 100-yd dash, obstacle course and Sea-Doo racing) and each athlete had to pick 7. Apolo said he did the basketball and the football players were "talking smack" and towering over him - and that most of them had played basketball before football - so he did bad (5 points.)
Then he won the bike race. He said he used his anger from the basketball thing. He came in third in the half-mile run, behind 2 incredibly-fast skiers. He skipped rock climbing because it depends on upper-body strength.
He won the 50-yard swim race despite not being in a pool "for years" (he said, "I still had some skills." - he was Washington state champion in the breast-stroke at age 12.)
Then he said: "Best by far, was the jet ski competition. The water was so choppy that I couldn't go as fast as I wanted to, because I was one of the smaller guys (compared to the football players) and the waves knocked me off the Jet Ski. Still, I did well and it was exhilarating."
He skipped the weight lifting since it was all presses - and the obstacle course "crushed" him. The high jump bar was at his neck and the other guys were over 6' and practically stepped over it. "The football players laughed" while he raced through the course.
His last comment: "It was an awesome time because it was light and fun and I had the chance to talk to the other athletes."

Wow, thanks Elsa and Christy. Christy, my goodness, you seem to have so many pictures and videos saved! Thank you for saving all those wonderful things from the past! ;D And Elsa, that was wonderful information to go along with the picutres. This competition was televised? That would have been great to see. Does anyone know what channel carried it?

Elsa, can you believe it, I don't have Apolo's auto yet (I have another book, tho). I've asked for it for my birthday. I can't wait to read it, sounds like a goldmind. Christy, I'm glad someone has all these pics! I've been looking around for them. Looks like CBS carried it, callie, from the mark on the images. That was back in the days before DVRs and the like, so there's probably no recording of it--does anyone know?
