I haven't been keeping up with the upcoming skaters but I tuned in to the U.S. Championship Ladies free skate just in time to catch Caroline Zhang. That kid is amazing! Definitely one to watch for in 2010. The commentator mentioned that she's been cautioned to be more graceful and no doubt this is because she is so powerful a skater. Personally I think she has it all. Strong jumps and beautiful spins. I was genuinely impressed.

Lexi et al, Did you see this? So poignant. When I first got this video clip I played it so many times. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPzPoT3WHUQ&feature=relatedOneof the comments: "The crowd was crying, he was crying, tatiana tarasowa was crying. Everyone. I just want to say thet he is the best skater of the world. And you have to kill him to stop him skating. This was beautiful speech. Thanks Alexei for everything :*"

Sniff, sniff, sniff......WOW!! What a beautful couple....and I was surprised to learn that Rena is a 31 yr old lung cancer survivor. Did anyone else have a tough time watching Kimmee Meissner last night? I felt really bad for her.

Did anyone else have a tough time watching Kimmee Meissner last night? I felt really bad for her. That was downright painful to watch. Kimmie is a local girl here in Maryland -- I've admired her skating right along, and felt that she was beautifully rounded -- both athletic and graceful. The commentator remarked that it's awfully hard to come back and repeat as the title-holder. I hope that she can come to terms with whatever is holding her back. I've felt right along that the age requirement for sending a team to the World Championships is a good thing -- but now that our top two ladies singles are ineligible, I'm starting to second-guess myself. Two years out to Vancouver, and the field for our senior ladies is wide open.

So... no Zhang fans then? Sorry. Won't mention her again. I was away from the set when Kimmie skated, and came back just as she was awaiting her scores. She did look really down and I was wondering what had gone wrong. I'm afraid I don't know much about her, but if she's as strong as everyone says I'm sure she'll bounce back.
And... I should have seen this coming. Some questions are best left unanswered.

Susie, where in Maryland are you from? I used to live in the DC area (Falls Church) and my best friend lives in Potomac.
I saw the proposal of Inoue and Baldwin. She seemd somewhat taken aback and not entirely comfortable, but sounds as if they've been together as a couple for a long time so I am sure he knew what he was doing.
I'm looking forward to watching the mens competition tonight. I've got the taped ladies on right now but will re-watch it later.

I live on the coast, Kirkland, and right now I'm working up in Baltimore. August, talk about Caroline all you want to. She's an excellent skater. I'm still trying to get a feel for the newest generation of girls coming up. I can't say that this year's winner did much for me, but she's young yet. The men's free skate was wild. That's the best I've ever seen Johnny Weir skate. And Evan Lysacek is one hunky guy, along with being a talented skater. The Associated Press headline reads: "Lysacek Wins Title - Barely". I had forgotten about that tie-breaker rule. Tanith Belbin knows how to pick 'em.

I forgot about the US Championships. I read about it in our sports page today. About Kimmie, it's been sad to watch her skate this whole season. It's like she questions her ability to do jumps, and tends to have a fall or two in her routines. I hope that next season is better for her because she is a good skater.

It is unfortunate in a way because they burn themselves out before they reach adulthood oftentimes. We may never have female skating icons again...with all the abuse their bodies take so early on, it seems they are in the spotlight for a short time. I remember seeing Sasha Cohen in Juniors and thought she was so great, but as she went on I lost interest in her. Dunno, maybe her personality. The mens event was awesome! I am NOT a fan of Johnny Weier but I have to give him credit, he gave a great, great performance and Evan was lucky to come away with the win. Johnny seems much more sure of himself this year and Evan seemed a bit wobbly on his landings. Put me on a deserted island with Evan any day! He is definitely hunky and a good match for his GF. I also liked the other two guys, particularly the adorable guy that did the Charlie Chaplin number...he is personality plus. I will look forward to him in the future, I hope he improves enough to go far because he is so enjoyable. My signature should read... "but there will never be another Yagudin"

Regarding the "burn out" I agree, and add to that my concerns about them crushing themselves under the pressure of trying not only to keep up, but keep improving when they're already skating so hard.
Those girls are looking forward to two years of intense physical and emotional stress. How can it be avoided? Lower the standards for the junior competitions so they don't have to push so hard while still so young? It would make sense, although I have no idea how they would implement it.
Young actors have limitations regarding how much time they can spend on set. Is it ok for young skaters to spend so many years flying around the world for competitions, rushing back and forth between school, and practice. Eating and sleeping in the car? But... if limits were placed on juniors, would they be up to standard by the time they are old enough for senior competition?
