I feel like a dork for asking this but what are the names of the Canadian pair figure skating that won the silver in the SLC where there was some controversy about them and how they should of won the gold? lisa, so you can get started with you tube that would be Sale & Pelletier...they were also awarded the gold...the controversy revolved around the french judge...i'll let someone else elaborate.

Let's see if I can remember this right - the French judge was accused of judging favorably for the Russian pair in in figure skating in exchange for the same courtesy towards the French pair in ice dancing...(?)
How close did I come?

I just adore Scott Hamilton! When I mentioned a while ago that I wasn't really into the mens figure skating I was forgetting about Scott. Duh, he is so awesome! He is so much fun to watch, has so much energy, especially love those back flips! I love how he plays with the audience and skates with humor and personality. I watched the Kurt Browning vids and I think I remember him. I enjoyed his performances, hes very good, great foot work. Thanks for the Kristi Y vids. Her cute personality really shows through in her performances, especially in Its So Quiet and Doop Doop. Her and Scott are just so fun to watch. I looked up Kats vids and watched the Calgary Olympics one, her second gold medal. I remember it now and just an amazing performance. Then I was trying to remember who was the girl that represented the US and found out it was Debi Thomas. I remember her now after watching her program and she was good but definitily not as good as Kat. She won the bronze medal and that was basicly the end of her skating career. I looked her up to see what she did after that and she became a orthopedic surgeon and she graduated from Stanford University in 1991 with a degree in engineering and from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1997. It also says that she still remains involved in the figure skating world as a frequent committee member and judge. Just thought I'd share that little bit of interesting info. lisam...for myself, men's figure skating started with the emergence of scott hamilton! what an A+ entertainer and competitor! 'walk this way' one of my fave performances of his (thanks for sharing that) and like apolo, scott is a better person off the ice too! what an amazing man!
go to page 2 and you'll know how much i LOVE kurt
kristi possess' the same fun-loving, risk-taking attitude that scott has...they both know how to win the audience that's for sure! ;D scott was quoted as saying, 'the judges are an extension of the audience.' indeed they are. 'doop, doop' loved that too...they're both soooo much fun to watch!
ok boo me but i was rooting for debi thomas in calgary '88...kat left the door open for her...but alas debi couldn't grab the 'gold' ring...that is great what she has accomplished in her personal life since and glad she is still actively involved with u.s. figure skating. thanks for sharing your info and post lisa!

Wow - thank you, number1fan! I totally missed the Kurt Browning Extravaganza on those two pages!! I am so thrilled to see you and others love him, too. But I have to tell you, I am still crying over the 2002 and 2006 Olympic closing credits you posted. I hadn't seen them, or don't remember seeing them. And especially the 2006 footage when Apolo won the gold and then the unexpected, joyful meeting with Shani that you pointed out - I just lost it. That was such a pure moment. The Winter Olympics always get to me -- just the triumph of the human spirit and how hard and millions of hours all those kids worked and suffered and the grace under pressure. I am always so blown away by it all - for years now. But Apolo was extra special. Funny - he has no idea that some lady is sitting alone in her house looking at the 2006 closing credits on YouTube and BAWLING when he yells out and runs and hugs Shani. No clue at all. But I sure thank him for the the wonderful ride! (I know - how cute is he in the picture below... I can't stand it -- that little Olympian in the making.) you're very welcome skaterswaltz! thank goodness for youtube! just to let you know, you're not the only blubbering fool out there... that shani/apolo moment gets to me every time it is those moments we treasure and hold close to our hearts... that's what the olympic spirit is ALL about!

Because I followed figured skating back when Dorothy Hamill came on the ice. I did see Peggy Fleming and Di*ck Button's performances and it's so funny to see them because you say to yourself ... that won a gold. Well these kids have come along way today in what they put out in their excellence. But getting back to Debi ... I so wanted her to win that year. I often wonder how she's doing.

Lisam, thanks so much for those links to Scotty’s performances. Walk This Way has long been one of my favorites of his! Debi Thomas was definitely talented, but she always seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. I think some were put off by her lack of emotion and sometimes ho-hum attitude. Where Kat played up the audience and they lapped it up, Debi didn't seem to make the same connection. I think if she'd had even a little bit of Kat's charisma, she would have done better. Let's face it, Kat may not have been the best technical skater, but she compensated for that with her costumes and her sometimes over-the-top antics artistery on the ice. She always knew she had a captive audience before stepping foot on the ice. I think if Debi had come along just a few years earlier or a few years later, she would have made more of an impression. Going up against Kat just wasn't fair to anyone in that day. That's only my perception. Others may have seen it completely differently. Debi was definitely the underdog and I'm sure had many rooting in her corner for just that reason. Let's see if I can remember this right - the French judge was accused of judging favorably for the Russian pair in in figure skating in exchange for the same courtesy towards the French pair in ice dancing...(?) How close did I come? I believe that’s how it went down Lori. It was quite the scandal. S&P handled it all with their usual grace and good manners and people had even more respect for them afterwards. Another couple with immense talent that always got caught up in the judging controversy was Bourne & Kratz. They’d eventually decided that they were performing for the audience and not the judges anymore and just went out and gave it their all. That’s when they really thrived. With their Michael Jackson performance in their last Olympic appearance, I thought for sure they’d medal well, until that unfortunate spill literally at the very end. The sad part was that it gave the judges the out they were looking for since the judges new they weren’t going to place them well regardless. I'm so glad that you mentioned Debi Thomas here. Because I followed figured skating back when Dorothy Hamill came on the ice. I did see Peggy Fleming and Di*ck Button's performances and it's so funny to see them because you say to yourself ... that won a gold. Hey Rhiannon - from here on out, we're referring to D*ck Button as 'Thingy Button". LOL I agree that it is funny to go back and see what was considered 'awe inspiring' in the 'old days'. I'm sure that someday we'll look back and think that a quad of today was a piece of cake.

Thanks for the info about Sale and Pelletier, what a shame that they were apart of that scandel, they seem like such a nice couple. And I feel so bad for them that they didn't receive the gold at the Olympics but I'm glad they did get it later. I just watched their Love Story performance and it was very good, very deserving of the gold! How did I miss them, I need to watch pairs more. Love Story youtube.com/watch?v=lcWheBuAAnw&mode=related&search=Also here's their Imagine performance, I just loved it! youtube.com/watch?v=zbdIPNyHxT8Question about their costumes in Love Story, why do you think they wore gray? I'm sure it has to do with the story of the movie but I'm too young to remember it. Also, who is this D*ck Button you are calling Thingy Button? I must of missed something.

Di*ck Button is his real name but if you try to type in Di*ck it comes up thingy so it's easier to just call him on here Thingy Button. He was an Olympic Figure Skating two time Gold Medal winner in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics. He does a lot of coverage on the figure skating. He's getting up there in years so I don't know how much coverage he does anymore. Great guy though.

I dislike Nancy and Tanya equally. I never found Nancy warm and fuzzy, even before ‘the incident’. She always seemed cold and, unfair as it is to say, it was always difficult for me to give credit to her skating. Even if I were being objective though, I think there are plenty of other ladies I’d put way ahead of her as my top favorites. I always liked Michelle, but she was always the bridesmaid, never the bride. I’m still dumbfounded that neither she nor Kirk will ever be Olympic gold medalists. That just ain’t right! Kurt is amazing. Very few can captivate an audience like him. His footwork alone should have garnered him a gold medal! Scott Hamilton. You gotta respect the man. He’s 49 years old and can still give many a run for their money! Scott, to me, he's the cream of the crop and what a guy much like our Apolo. I see so many great qualities mirrored in each other. I think they could be or maybe they even are great friends. What a life story Scott Hamilton also has ... all of his challenges when he was little, illnesses and then at the high point of his carear he was stricken again with a life threatening illness and he still stands strong today. He's such a plus to mankind because the man is kind. I agree with pretty much everything you've all said here about the past generations of skaters. It was so much fun to watch but like August mentioned ... Nancy Kerrigan was not warm and fuzzy and to me did not have what the other champions had. Outwardly she wasn't the best skater and inwardly she was hmm conceited. The media built her up as as the new Katharine Hepburn on ice. Not. It was a great era of skating. I was really into it. Great memories. And Di*ck Button ... loved to listen to his analogies. lexi and rhiannon...what can i say but ITA

I am SUCH an Olympics fan. I have recorded (on crappy videotape) the closing credits for summer/winter Olympics for years. That scene between Shani & Apolo was a major ingredient in my fandom.
I had the opinion that Apolo was a flashy hot-shot bad-boy in 2002 and even in 2006. There were hints of greatness (the crawl across the finish line in '02, his joy with his '06 bronze medals) that I admired, but I wasn't completely sold until those final few days in Torino.
Throughout the games, I was intrigued by the crap between Shani & Chad Hedrick. I fell solidly on Shani's side, and I loved seeing him on the sidelines cheering Chad on, despite the apparent disrespect he was getting from Chad. It was when Apolo won the gold in the 500M, and as he was celebrating he was asking "Where's Shani?", and that scene in the workout room, that told me 'any guy who is Shani's friend MUST be a good guy...' I really sat up and took notice of EVERY detail of Apolo in those final few days partly because of that, and the rest is history...
I would LOVE to meet Shani someday!
------------------------------
Who was the gorgeous French figure skater guy in Torino - was it Philippe L-something? Wowza! (He skated an exhibition to James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful' on the last night)...

I would LOVE to meet Shani someday! lori...i would too! shani sure showed the world what a terrific person he is didn't he? (can't say that about chad tho)
