Chapter 13
I sat in the hallway as I heard the 1500 final about to take place. The sour taste of vomit started filling my mouth as my stomach churned with sick emotions of complete and utter failure of being unable to make it out of the semifinals. The race kept running through my mind. Every time I closed my eyes, that’s all I could see, my mistake. Why oh why did I have to make that pass? How could I have done something so stupid? I didn’t even get a chance.
“Apolo…” I looked up to find my dad staring at me. I immediately looked away, too embarrassed with myself to look him in the eye. “Apolo…” I felt his hand on my shoulder and I could feel my heart fall deeper into the pit of my stomach.
“Dad, I can’t, not now.” I slowly grabbed my duffle bag and stood up, ready to walk away. It was then my dad grabbed my arm and pulled me into a hug. I could feel myself fighting the tears as I just stood in my dad’s arms.
“I’m proud of you Apolo, you did your best today.” Walk away now Apolo, walk away before you completely fall apart. I removed myself from his arms and looked down at my hands.
“I’ll talk to you soon dad.” I made my way down the long hallway, I could here the crowd cheering in the distance. I was about to leave the arena building when I once again heard my name. I glanced out of the corner of my and saw my coach with Allison. I didn’t even stop to talk to them. I couldn’t face any of them, at least not at this very moment. It wasn’t long until I found myself back in my room in the Olympic Village. I locked the door behind me and sunk into my bed. I took a deep breath and sighed. Why did this happen to me? I couldn’t make myself move, I couldn’t make myself think about anything other than what had happened. How am I supposed to bounce back from this? My morale was at an all time low as I watched the hours pass by on my clock. I was suddenly awoken from my misery from a knock on my door. I looked at the door for a while and chose not to open it. Whoever it was would go away, at least I hoped that. But it didn’t work out that way, the incessant knocking continued.
“Apolo, I know you’re in there.” It was Danni. “Apolo open the door.” I didn’t budge. Danni not now…please go away. “Apolo I’m not going anywhere.” Leave me alone. “Okay Apolo, prepared to be annoyed.” And that’s when it started…the singing…the very loud, very bad singing. And from all the songs she had to choose… “The sun will come out tomorrow…” I closed my eyes and cringed. “Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there’ll be sun.” I wasn’t sure how long I was going to be able to take this torture. I felt a slight smile come to my lips. This beautiful girl is standing outside my door, singing at the top of her lungs, and not so well if I may say, making a complete fool of herself, for me. I sat up in my bed and continued to listen. “Just thinking about tomorrow clear away the cobwebs and…what the hell are you looking at.” I burst out laughing, she was obviously collecting an audience with the racket she was making. “and the sorrow till there’s none. When I’m stuck in a day that’s gray and lonely…”
“Hey lady, you think you can shut the hell up. Some of us are competing tomorrow and need to get some sleep.”
“Hey dude they’re called ear plugs. I’m on a freaking mission here and I don’t need you getting in my way so why don’t you kiss my a…” I pulled open the door before she could finish the word that was hanging on the tip of her tongue. She looked at me for a second and then turned to my next door neighbor. “You have a goodnight.” She pushed passed me and my neighbor just glared at me and slammed the door. I slowly closed the door and sighed. I once again took a seat on my bed and Danni followed. We simply sat there in silence for about five minutes until she handed me something. A video, I gave her a questioning look.
“It’s a copy of your heat, thought you’d like to review your race and what not.”
“Thanks.” I knew she was going to ask, I could feel it.
“Why did you do that?” There it was, why did I do it? I could feel the anger building. The emotions that I had pent up the entire day was about to pour out.
“Jesus Christ, is that why you’re here?”
“You didn’t have to make that move Apolo, you were already in qualifying position.”
“You don’t think I know that? What do you think I’ve been telling myself these past few hours? It’s all I can think about Danni.”
“But why did you do it Apolo? Why?” I ran my hands through my hair.
“What do you mean why?”
“You know what I think Apolo? You made that move because you were greedy. You just couldn’t stand coming in second place, you had to be first. You made that move because you wanted to be first and the move didn’t work out to your liking. You got what you deserved.” I just sat in disbelief, all I could do was just glare at her. This was not comforting. I stood up and moved to the door, opening it so that Danni could leave. She stood up and started digging through my duffle bag.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” She slowly stood up and took out one of my many bandanas. She shoved it in my hand and pushed me out the door. Before I knew it she slipped her hand into mine and started dragging me down the hall.
