Hey! Check out the new addition on Apolo's website! (...and how rarely that happens! LOL) It's called 'Yuki's Corner', and the topic de jour is the new padding system at the Utah Olympic Oval. Now isn't this a great idea? Who better to keep his site up to date than his dad? I think LoriGND called it way back at Nationals last year. A course on Short Track 101 - by Yuki Ohno. We couldn't ask for a better instructor. www.apoloantonohno.com/(this site is cached, so you may need to refresh your screen if you haven't dumped your cookies lately) i was wondering where aofreak got the article from. she posted yuki's article in the apolo article thread yesterday...good find guys

seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2008719588_olysports08.htmlHere's Apolo's part in the article: Apolo Ohno Seattle, short-track speedskating One potential Olympian who likely needs no introduction is Apolo Ohno, America's most famous short-track speedskater, not to mention a "Dancing With the Stars" TV star. Ohno, 26, hopes to cap his Olympic career in Vancouver with a sixth medal, which would make him the most-decorated male U.S. Winter Games athlete in history. He's first to admit it won't be easy. "Times have changed," he says. "My sport has been evolving. But I'm definitely still one of the top competitors for medals, including gold medals." Ohno, a multiple medalist in both the 2002 Salt Lake and 2006 Turin Games, says he'll bring everything he has to the table at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, where he helped the U.S. team to a rare relay-race win earlier this season on the World Cup circuit. "It's a fantastic arena," Ohno says. "The athletes feel like the fans are almost over top of the ice. It's going to be amazing." Ohno, who now lives and trains in Salt Lake City, is on his way to the short-track World Championships, March 6-8 in Vienna. That competition will go a long way toward telling him how he stands against the world with the Vancouver Games looming, he says. And he insists he's still a skater, not just a hot dancer. "Yes, I can still skate," he says.

www.star-telegram.com/olympics/story/1185642.html Apolo Ohno, not Michael Phelps, is the Olympian we should admireBy CHAREAN WILLIAMScjwilliams@star-telegram.com The Olympic athletes in the winter sports get no respect. A teleconference Wednesday promoted the Vancouver Games, which are only 53 weeks away. Predictably, the second question to USOC boss Jim Scherr was about Michael Phelps. It wasn’t the last mention of Phelps. The star of last summer’s Beijing Games was photographed doing what many young people do. A British tabloid showed him smoking from a marijuana pipe at a party in Columbia, S.C. There are worse things, but this is Michael Phelps, Olympic hero, All-American boy. He isn’t supposed to be putting illegal substances into his body. That’s why it’s so disappointing. His statement of apology didn’t help, either. It sounded like something written by a PR firm, especially since it had similar language to the apology he released after his DUI arrest in Maryland four years ago. He’s sorry; he made a mistake; it won’t happen again. It came across as less than sincere. Phelps’ sponsors, including Speedo and Omega, are sticking by him, for now, but he has shown a troubling pattern of "youthful mistakes." The USOC can’t penalize him, but it did send Phelps a letter offering help, and Scherr wants a face-to-face meeting. "I think, obviously, his sponsors and the people that are close to him will be and are concerned about whether or not there may be a recurrence or whether or not this is a pattern of behavior," Scherr said Wednesday. "I would just say, based on this occurrence, we at the U.S. Olympic Committee ... are exceptionally disappointed in Michael, as I know he is in himself, and we will be following up and having direct conversations with Michael, and the people that are close to him, in the near future." Phelps has won a record 14 gold medals, including eight in Beijing. He might win more medals in the 2012 Olympics in London. But he has lost something much more valuable: his good name. So if you’re looking for a real All-American, Olympic champion who will never have to say he’s sorry, look at Apolo Ohno. Sure, you’ve heard of him — for winning Dancing With the Stars in 2007. But Ohno is just as good — maybe better — as a short-track speed skater. He has won five Olympic medals, including two golds, and is one of only four Americans who have won three medals in a single Winter Olympics. Anton is his middle name, not trouble. "All Olympians, once they’re allowed to call themselves U.S. Olympic athletes, I think there are certain guidelines and protocol that go along with becoming an elite athlete," Ohno said Wednesday. "If someone does have a camera phone and does take pictures, in public and in private, I think it’s important to represent what you’d like your mom to see or what you’d like little kids to see. "... I think it’s important for you to have that image that you’d like to see if you were a younger kid looking up. It’s very important to be aware of your surroundings and what you’re doing and the decisions you make." Scherr shouldn’t sit down with Phelps; he should have Ohno do it. Ohno could teach Phelps a lot. "When you’re thrust in the spotlight, it really kind of forces you to kind of look at yourself and say, 'OK, the things that I do will reflect not only on myself,’ " Ohno said. "... I just think you should want to represent yourself the best that you can, because of what situation you’re in. It is hard. You’re in a glass bowl. People are always looking at you and trying to see if you’re above making mistakes. Sometimes you’re not really rewarded for the good things that you do, but rather when you make a mistake is when people kind of start paying attention. "But there are tons and tons of athletes who are excellent ambassadors, and those are the people I look up to." Ohno is the ambassador we should look up to. He’s the example of what a gold-medal winning Olympic athlete should be.

Unless I am misreading, this announcement does not say that Apolo will be there, just that he is on the 2009 Benefit Committee. I would be interested in attending this event if I knew exactly who is going to be there in person. The website says stay tuned for more information. I may call the number and see what I can find out. I would enjoy seeing some of the other figure skaters as well.
If anyone has more definitive information, please let me know.
