Just got a google alert for a travel guy ( who also sells airline tickets) who blogged the following question: How does Alaska's sponsorship of Apolo affect you? Does it increase good will?" Here is my response and his address if anyone else cares to respond to him. rickseaney.com/2009/09/15/when-money-is-tight-should-airlines-invest-in-ice-skaters/comment-page-1/#comment-93854Yes, absolutely. Alaska could have chosen no better athlete to support and represent them. Not only is Apolo a winner on the ice, but he is a young man of incredible character and integrity who will represent his country, his state, his city of Seattle and Alaska Airlines( a west coast carrier) honorably and with total committment. Hope they paint his picture on the plane! By the way, have you ever seen short track skates? Or a competition. I highly recommend it.
In times of restraint, sponsorships are hard to come by and I would rather see a company represent an individual amateur athlete than a professional team of any sport. This community service will definitely give them good will. I for one, will remember this when I'm looking for an airline to book for my personal travel.Musical Mom

Got potatos? ------------------ thepacker.com/Gold-medal-skater-Apolo-Ohno-to-promote-Washington-potatoes/Article.aspx?articleid=836909&authorid=676&categoryid=122&feedid=215&src=recentGold medal skater Apolo Ohno to promote Washington potatoes Published on 09/17/2009 04:49pm By Don Schrack Olympic speed skating gold medal winner and Federal Way, Wash. native Apolo Ohno is partnering with the Washington Potato Commission, Moses Lake, to help spread the word about the nutritional values of the state’s spuds. Ohno’s efforts will target the public in general and young consumers in particular, the commission said in a news release. “We’re excited about the opportunity to work with one of the greatest athletes in sport,” Chris Voigt, the commission’s executive director, said in the release. “Given Apolo’s natural affinity for Washington potatoes and his love for eating and cooking healthy foods, we’re thrilled to have him as ambassador for our champion potatoes and healthy messages.” Ohno, who has earned a spot on the 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic team, and chef Franz Junga of Seattle’s Il Forniao Restaurant recently completed a lengthy photo and video shoot for the commission. The photos and videos will be used by the commission in its publications, posters, feature articles and on its Web site, the release said. “Apolo shares in the vision and values of the Washington Potato Commission,” Angela Pixton, a registered nurse and chair of the commission’s public and industry education committee, said in the release. “His passion and interest in encouraging kids to lead healthy lifestyles with proper nutrition and exercise is what makes him a terrific ambassador for the commission.”

SPEED SKATING PREVIEW: SHORT TRACK -- THOSE TO WATCH(from Universal Sports: 9.24.09) There are a few constants in this Olympic year: Apolo Ohno, Lee Ho-Suk and Wang Meng are all skating strong. The South Koreans and Chinese are sure to pile on the medals during the fall World Cup circuit heading into the Vancouver Olympics in February. These facts are clear. But who else looks good on the ice? We did some research and came up with five men and five women to watch during this short track season. MEN Apolo Ohno, 27, United StatesArguably the most decorated short track speed skater in U.S. history, this could be Ohno's final season as a competitive racer. He hinted at the idea of making a run at the 2014 Olympics in a Reuters story earlier this year, but it's all speculation at this point. The 27-year-old has five Olympic medals -- two gold, one silver and two bronze. Ohno took home three medals (gold, two bronze) from the 2006 Games. In Vancouver, watch for Ohno in the three individual events. J.R. Celski, 19, United StatesCelski decided he wanted to be a speed skater after watching Ohno win gold and silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Eight years later, Celski will attempt to win his own medals at the Vancouver Games. Celski won two races at the recent Olympic Trials -- and made the shortlist of five men to skate in Vancouver -- but also suffered a gash in his left leg courtesy of his right skate blade. He's already working on a rehab plan, and if he's mentally fit, Celski will pose a serious threat come February. Lee Ho-Suk, 23, South KoreaLee cleaned up at the 2009 Short Track World Championships, earning gold medals in the 1,000m and 1,500m en route to taking the overall title. He's got four other world championship gold medals, and his Olympic resume -- which includes just the 2006 Games -- has a gold medal (5,000m relay) and two silvers (1,000m, 1,500m). As a youth he won the world junior title from 2003-2005. Clearly, Lee is already established as one of the top skaters on the planet. He leads a strong South Korean contingent this season. Sung Si-Bak, 22, South KoreaSung got the 2009-10 season started with a bang on Sept. 19, leading the South Korean men in a sweep of the 1,500m final at a World Cup meet in Beijing. However, his resume goes much deeper than that. He was crowned the 1,500m overall champion of the four-meet World Cup series in 2008-09, and also won the overall gold medal during that showcase. At 22, Sung likely has at least one Olympics left in him after Vancouver. Sung and teammate Lee are right up there with Ohno on the list of top skaters to watch this season. Charles Hamelin, 25, CanadaHamelin has plenty of gold medals hanging from his fireplace mantle -- most notably from the 2007 and 2009 World Championships -- and he was part of the second-place 5,000m relay team at the 2006 Turin Games. At the 2009 Worlds in Vienna, Austria, the 25-year-old Hamelin won the 500m title and placed third in the 3,000m super final, shoring up third place overall. Hamelin is Canada's best hope for a men's short track medal in Vancouver, but keep an eye on teammate Olivier Jean as well. OTHERS TO WATCH:- Lee Jung-Su, South Korea -Jeff Simon, United States- Olivier Jean, Canada WOMEN Katherine Reutter, 21, United StatesLast season, Reutter was right on the edge of having a breakout year. After a strong showing at the Olympic Trials two weeks ago -- she won five events -- Reutter seems ready to square off with the Wang Mengs of the world. She picked up a gold and a bronze medal at a World Cup meet in Beijing recently, so there's no doubt that Reutter has the talent to win on the international scene. A few more podium finishes this fall will make a strong statement with the Olympics right around the corner. Wang Meng, 24, ChinaAs Wang's resume demonstrates, she has made a habit of winning races the past few years. She won four titles at the 2009 Worlds, four at the 2008 Worlds and plenty more earlier in her career. At the 2006 Turin Olympics, Wang completed the medal trifecta -- gold in the 500m, silver in the 1,000m and bronze in the 1,500m. In Vancouver, Wang could very easily win a trio of gold medals. The 24-year-old is in the prime of her career and enters this season as the top skater in the rink. Zhou Yang, 18, ChinaWith Wang holding the post as China's top female skater, Zhou is a close second. The 18-year-old won the overall 1,500m title during the 2008-09 World Cup, the only event not won by Wang. On Sept. 19 Zhou captured 1,500m gold at the opening meet of the 2009-10 World Cup circuit in Beijing. Does this talented teen have what it takes to be an Olympic medalist? In the crowded short track oval, don't overlook Zhou. Jessica Gregg, 21, CanadaWith a victory in the 500m at the Canadian Olympic Trials in August, Gregg secured a spot on the national squad heading to Vancouver. It's the first such honor of her career, and it couldn't have come at a better time. Despite the foothold that China and South Korea seem to have on short track speed skating, Gregg is the star of a Canadian women's team looking to make its home fans proud in February. Watch for Gregg to make a splash on the World Cup circuit leading up the Games. Lee Eun-Byul, 17, South KoreaSouth Korea has a strong team on both the men's and women's side, and Lee is a 17-year-old youngster who has great potential to do some damage on the international scene. She opened the current season by finishing second in both the 1,000m and 1,500m finals in Beijing, and followed that up by skating on the winning 3,000m relay squad. Lee's performance last weekend means she is second in the World Cup rankings for the 2009-10 season. Will she remain in the top few spots? OTHERS TO WATCH:- Shin Sae-Bom, South Korea - Allison Baver, United States- Yang Shin-Young, South Korea Click on article for photos and profiles on their "contenders" list: www.universalsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=23000&atclid=204797555&CFID=57873681&CFTOKEN=28496154&jsessionid=aa30c3a8dc0a7d157736

Updated: September 29, 2009, 1:23 PM ET Olympians Ohno, Vonn among P&G endorsers Associated Press
CINCINNATI -- Five-time Olympic medalist Apolo Anton Ohno is among the athletes endorsing Procter & Gamble Co. products as part of the company's 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics marketing.
Cincinnati-based P&G recently announced sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic team for the next two Olympics. Company officials Tuesday said they have also reached agreements with six athletes so far, with more expected.
Speedskater Ohno, a medalist in the past two Winter Olympics, added to his popularity with his 2007 victory in ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." Seattle native Ohno and snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis will be featured in Vicks cold medicine advertising.
Speedskater Allison Baver, ice dancer Tanith Belbin, bobsledding's Vonetta Flowers and skier Lindsey Vonn will promote P&G beauty brands such as Pantene shampoo and Olay skin cream.
Kirk Perry, P&G's vice president for North America, said the consumer products maker plans substantial promotions, including online and mobile advertising, beginning in the weeks leading to the Feb. 12-28 games.
"We've got tremendous athletes representing our brands," he said. "These folks are all medal contenders."
He expects to add to the endorser lineup before and after the games.
The world's biggest advertiser has been expanding its sports marketing, in August making a major sponsorship deal with the National Football League. Perry said P&G likes the ability to reach multiple key demographic groups through sports.

I dont know how to post pics, but if you click on the link, it will show you a new pic of APolo on the new (ugly) uniforms. (The article's nothing new...just the whole Alaska Airlines thing, but the pic is new [to me at least]) Here's the long link with the article underneath: images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://blog.seattlepi.com/aerospace/library/Apoloohno.jpg&imgrefurl=http://blog.seattlepi.com/aerospace/category.asp%3FblogID%3D23%26category%3D2421&usg=__Yggyjdny4HhcAyFkKIi02L4X5tc=&h=320&w=470&sz=97&hl=en&start=9&tbnid=NY9lCdfo-bh_1M:&tbnh=88&tbnw=129&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dapolo%2Bohno%2B2006%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3DoffSeattle-based Alaska Airlines announced Tuesday it was sponsoring short-track speed skater and "Dancing with the Stars" winner Apolo Ohno, a native of the Seattle area, in the run-up to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. "As one of the greatest U.S. short-track speed skaters of our generation and a Northwest native, we feel Apolo Ohno is a natural fit with our airline," Steve Jarvis, Alaska Airlines' vice president of marketing, sales and customer experience said in a news release. "Apolo's humble upbringing and gold-medal performance resembles the 'Alaska Spirit' that has helped us become the dominant U.S. West Coast carrier and industry leader in customer service and on-time performance." "My racing career started in Vancouver, and that experience changed my life," Ohno said. "Coming back to my roots in the Pacific Northwest to compete for my sixth medal is especially meaningful, and it is an honor to partner with my hometown airline in the most important race of my life." Ohno fans can "follow Apolo" as he trains and competes by signing up at followapolo.com. Ohno is scheduled to compete in four qualifying World Cup competitions, starting Sept. 17 in Beijing and ending Nov. 15, 2009, in Marquette, Mich.
