LINK: bakercg.typepad.com/baker/2009/03/new-york-times-sports-section-dancing-with-irrelevance.html- - - - - - New York Times Sports Section: Dancing With IrrelevanceI have been a devoted New York Times reader for a couple of decades, at least. I renew my print subscription every year, without fail. Sometimes, I wonder why. Like yesterday, when I looked at the front page of the Sunday sports section. What dimwit sports editor thinks that anyone wants or needs to read a couple thousand words, spread over three separate stories, accompanied by multiple color photos - all about... ready?: Apolo Anton Ohno."Who???" you legitimately ask. Apolo Anton Ohno is a short track speed skater that might be known to some as a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars." Newsflash: Short track speed skating is a sport about which NOBODY gives a crap every four years during the Olympics. It is the badminton of the Winter Games. Some advice for the Times' publisher: Kill the sports section and give raises to the business and news departments. - - - - - - Well, who peed in your cornflakes this morning, hmm? I say we spam his blog with 'I LOVE APOLO' comments...(just kidding). ;] His word order annoys me. LOL.

SusanG me thinks this guy is about to be soooooooo sorry he wrote that! LOL Stingy B@stard begrudging us a couple photos on the front page once in a blue moon! I'll bet more peeps WOULD care about it if Short Track got this kind of coverage in the US more often.

click on the url and follow the directions for signing up for a typepad account. Got my 10,000 words in under my name though. I may live to regret that! But Ted and I today were just bewailing the lack of civility and the incredible cavailing by people who no longer value real communication and prefer anonymous nastiness. SusanG

It sucks spending hours leafing through ESPN and all of their counterparts (if that's the word i want) trying to find something, -anything-, about Short Track. ...and yet golf gets hours of coverage. Something about that seems unfair.

Sk8er, check your pm's. And I guess I just might have to bite the bullet and vent my ire on the blog as well. I saw it yesterday and decided to let it settle a bit. I tend to get testy when I read that kind of crap, ....and I thought it was just me.

Grrrrrrrrrrr....if short track is a sport that "nobody gives a crap about every four years" then why the heck were there more than 34,000 tickets requested for the short track speed skating sessions at the 2010 winter games and it had to go to lottery? I wanted to post a comment right away to this guy but luckily I didn't have a typepad account...

frankly, the guy's logic reminds me of something my sister/niece said to me along the same lines a week or so ago. Some people can be so friggin' simple-minded..

Reply from his royal nibs.... bakercg.typepad.com/baker/2009/03/oh-no-ohno-has-fans.htmlOh no! Who knew Ohno has fans?!My snarky screed about the New York Times coverage of Apolo Anton Ohno has set off a mini-firestorm over in the chat room of the Got Apolo web site and in the comments on this blog. I had no idea he has such a massive following. Apparently, somebody does, indeed, give a crap about short track speed skating. As a colleague just pointed out to me: "Someone who follows the Tour de France shouldn't have much to say about short track speed skating." Fair enough. For the record, I never questioned Mr. Ohno's atheltic ability or his dedication. I just questioned the Times' editorial choices given the (perhaps limited) popularity of the sport. Then again, any story that pushes Mr. April, steroid-boy A-Rod, off the front page of the New York papers is OK by me. I now plan to join the 332 proud members of the Apolo fan club over on Facebook and lobby for him to appear in his own reality series.
