MARQUETTE -- If you missed the short-track speedskating trials in September, you're in luck.
Three-hundred-fifty athletes from 34 countries will be coming to Marquette next week for the final World Cup qualifier before the Winter Olympics in February.
Trials will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Berry Events Center in Marquette. Tickets are still available and organizers want to pack the place.
"It is such a big and important competition for USA speedskating, for the worldwide speedskating community, leading up to the Olympics in Vancouver," said U.S.O.E.C. Director Jeff Kleinschmidt. "Personally I'm very excited, I'm honored, I think it's a tremendous event for our community. It'll have a very significant economic impact on Marquette County."
To order tickets you can go here or call (906) 227-1032.
This is the third time the city of Marquette is hosting the international speedskating trials.
There will be two different highlight shows shown on the VS Network Saturday and Sunday.

Here's the caption for the two photos 19 posted from the Mining Journal:
The International Skating Union's World Cup short track speedskating competition will take place at Northern Michigan University's Berry Events Center Thursday-Sunday. Apolo Anton Ohno, one of the best-known athletes taking part, arrived at Sawyer International Airport Monday night. Above, Ohno looks at the airport's welcome banners made by school kids. At right, Ohno and his father, Yuki, make their way through the airport. Ohno and the rest of the U.S. team will be skating against athletes from more than 30 other countries in the last big competition before the Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, in February. Does anyone know why, the last two seasons, there hasn't been any live coverage online?
I remember being able to watch Nationals abot 3 years ago from the Webcam. Then, for that same season, we got to view the World Cup at SLC LIVE on our computers, and we even got to see the World Championships in Korea (when Apolo won) that year.
Does anyone know why that all the sudden stopped, to the point where we now have NO live coverage? It's a bummer and it certainly makes it harder to follow when all we can do is look at the numbers on screen. Technology has gotten better, so I would figure coverage would get better, not worse!

Funding, as always.
I inquired with one of the staffers at the Oval, why all of the USA WC events were held in SLC where the pads are safe. Response: We barely break even on those events.
So, we need more Stephen Colbert types to take up the mantle of supporting US athletes.
ISU actually governs and controls the WC video, web-feeds etc. I guess we take are argument to them. I think it's very discriminating that all of the Asian/European countries show the event live or semi-delayed, yet no US station will support these kids in their efforts. Without some type of video media outlet showing this sport, it will have a difficult time developing a fanbase that would then warrant continued media coverage of events.

I usually keep quite but this "no coverage" is a real soar point with me. The sports that get all the coverage are the ones with athletes who have their own swinging door in and out of rehab or other criminal matters. Take a sport where there is no scandal and it is not worth the time to cover them. The media only wants what sells and bad publicity seems to be the big seller. These skaters and the figure skaters are clean as far as things like that go and that does not sell for the media. It really drives me up a wall. If anyone of these skates got caught with drugs or something else it would make the news. But, let them just skate and do a good job and the media will never notice them. It is SO unfair. In order to get TV coverage you have to be another Michael Vicks. This makes me so mad my mind actually goes blank. These skaters are the REAL athletes. They are doing it for the love of the sport. It is just so unfair that these skaters work and train so hard and athletes with a criminal history and drug history are getting the big money and all the media coverage.

There are people who still lump these elite/amateur athletes (not just ours but from other sports as well) with the pros as in they do this for the money too. Obviously they don't the difference between elite/amateur and pro. I mean, yes, the amateur part is less of what it was in the era of Jansen/Heiden, but its still there. Cynics all around. Not all athletes are stupid enough to dope up.
