Ugh. Such an emotional time! I don't want him to retire (especially with Ahn's aspirations about skating in 2018) but I want him to be happy. All my favorite Olympians are retiring! It's like it's not a race with out Ahn and Apolo! *sigh* The possible end of an era.

A part of me wants the offseason to be over already, but I know that the closer it gets the more I am going to be freaking out. I just can't believe it could be the end already. Ahh, as long as the future of short track is in good hands I guess I'll be okay without him on the ice (not that I haven't seen this already, but a lot can happen between now and Vancouver). I don't know. I'll have to mull this over. As a side note, I think it's the PR nerd in me that is excited for the media summit. lol. :] Another side note - this was 500? wow. time flies. :] i like the five stars. lol.

Congratulations, BBB on the 'Big Five'!
It seems that there isn't going to be a World Cup 5 & 6 this year, maybe (?) because they're usually contested in February, and there's another conflicting event in February - in Vancouver, I hear... *wink*
Also, I read on the 'tentative schedule' awhile back that American Cup 3 may possibly take on a greater role this season as the qualifier for the World Championships / World Team Championships.

Ooohh! And it's in my "neck of the woods," too. This event must be connected with the Virginia club, right? It will be close to my birthday, so...Happy Birthday to me! Road trip! Congratulations on the five stars, 3B! I'm feeling like I should salute you, or sumpin'.

LOL. Thanks guys! ;]
And yeah, in an Olympic year there's always only 4 world cups. And I always like that AM Cups have some influence on things.

I'm attending the World Cup in Marquette in November. Already bought my tickets. I just got a letter from the US Olympic Education Center in Marquette, that the ISU has extended the competition by one day "due to the increase in anticipated participants and the need for additional competition times". It will now run from November 12th through the 15th.
I'm assumming that since this WC and the one in Montreal will determine how many skaters each country can send to the Olympics, that every country will be very well represented.
Whooo hooo an extra day of Short Track.....doesn't get better than that. and there is no additional charge!!

Not sure what the best thread for this would be. I decided to just place it here. U.S. National Short Track Team Trains in MarquetteJune 18, 2009webb.nmu.edu/SportsUSOEC/SiteSections/News/News.shtml?articleID=108049&team=&display=short&category=&IsNewsBureau=MARQUETTE— The United States National Short Track Speedskating team will be training at Northern Michigan University’s Berry Events Center Monday through next Tuesday, June 22-30. The camp is hosted by the United States Olympic Education Center and U.S. Speedskating. Expected to participate are five-time Olympic medalist Apolo Anton Ohno, Olympic bronze medalist J.P. Kepka and world champion and Olympic gold medalist long track skater Shani Davis; short track Olympians Allison Baver, Kimberly Derrick, and Anthony Lobello, and long track Olympian Charles Ryan Leveille; as well as short track national team members Eduardo Alvarez, Ryan Bedford, J.R. Celski, Alyson Dudek, Lana Gehring, Mary Grace, Travis Jayner, Jordan Malone, Katherine Reutter, Jeffery Simon, Jessica Smith. Baver, Bedford, Davis, Derrick, Grace, Reutter and Lobello are all former USOEC resident student-athletes. The training camp previews the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials and ISU Speedskating World Cup to be held in Marquette on Sept. 8-12 and Nov. 12-15, respectively. Practices during the training camp will be open to the public. Sessions are 8-9:45 a.m. each morning, as well as 2-3:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday (June 22-24), Saturday (June 27) and next Monday (June 29) and 3- 4:30 p.m. Friday (June 26). Additionally, community members who have purchased tickets for the Olympic Trials or World Cup can participate in the ‘Skate with the Team’ event at 4-5 p.m., Thursday (June 25) by showing their ticket at the door. The Berry Events Center ticket office will be open for ticket purchase 60 minutes prior to and throughout the ‘Skate with the Team’ event. Skate rental will be available at no cost. The skaters will also be available for autograph signing at Friday’s (June 26) downtown Superior Bike Fest events. “Having the National Team train here is a great opportunity for the Marquette community,” said Jeff Kleinschmidt, USOEC director. “The open practices allow the public to see what the sport is about and to get to know the athletes before the Olympic Trials and World Cup in Marquette this fall. The ‘Skate with the Team’ for those who have purchased tickets to the fall events is an incredible chance, especially for Upper Peninsula children, to share the ice and shake hands with Olympians.” In accordance with U.S. Speedskating rules and regulations, no flash photography, filming, videotaping or electronic recording of any kind (including cell phones) is permitted during practice sessions. Tickets for the Olympic Trials and World Cup events are on sale and can be purchased at the EZ Ticket outlet located in the Superior Dome or online at www.nmu.edu/tickets. Tickets bought prior to Aug. 1 for the Trials and Oct. 1 for the World Cup receive a 25 percent discount. All-event passes bought in advance also receive a Speedskating Savings Card for discounts at Marquette County businesses. For more information, go to www.goldrushskate.com or contact the USOEC at 906- 227-2888 or usoec@nmu.edu

I guess we'll be getting some really great shots of the guys in the coming weeks ;D ;D Hmmm, maybe not - it says "In accordance with U.S. Speedskating rules and regulations, no flash photography, filming, videotaping or electronic recording of any kind (including cell phones) is permitted during practice sessions." It DOES sound like a really cool opportunity for the local people, though, doesn't it?

I wasn't even considering going to WC4 in Marquette, given that it's already going to be a fortune to fly there for Oly trials. However, Southwest just announced an introductory rate to Milwaukee for - wait for it - $35 dollars each way. From there you can rent a car and drive 5 1/2 hours or get a jumper flight for a reasonable cost- although most take you to Detroit first, and it takes 5 hours anyway...and for more money then the car we'd have to rent anyway. These are being snapped up fast. My 'to' flight from Vegas to Milwaukee disappeared in a matter of hours and now it's up to $84 - still cheaper than the nearly 500 smacks peeps have been reporting. I can still book a return flight on Monday for $35. More bad news, this has to be booked by Thursday (Tomorrow!) and that's even if the 35 dollar deal is still left. Here are the cities Southwest is offering this to (too bad they didn't start it earlier than Nov for Oly trials...) One-way Fares From: Travel 11/1- 11/18/09 Baltimore/ Washington $35 Kansas City $35 Tampa Bay $35 Las Vegas $35 Orlando $35 Phoenix $35 so the next question....who here wants to consider this? ...and more importantly, make a decision... F-A-S-T?
