I was lucky to spend some time last weekend with Allison and she is totally lovely, in all respects. I am so amazed at the effort she continues to put forth and the risks she takes. She really appreciates the support and cheers that she gets btw... You go, Allison.

She really appreciates the support and cheers that she gets btw... You go, Allison. ... And I can attest to that fact too! ;D Allison was so cute Saturday afternoon... she was trying to say something to me and Sam... with her head down and hand to her forehead, Sam thought something was wrong! Then she looked up and said "Thank you very much" to us in Japanese! Her parents were there too and it was a precious moment... we all had a nice chuckle over that one.

And here is even more of a testament to what a sweetie Allison is!____________________________________________________ Short Track Speedskaters Provide Christmas for Families in NeedFor many Utah families Christmas creates a financial dilemma, with unemployment on the rise and a struggling economy, the cost of providing Christmas gifts for children is more than some families can handle. But member of the US National Short Track Speedskating Training Program based in Kearns Utah at the Utah Olympic Oval decided to guarantee a happy Christmas for two families from the Utah youth village this year. Two-time Olympian Allison Baver organized the adopt-a-family program and enlisted the help of her teammates and the short track training program staff. “There are so many families in need,” Baver said. “If we didn’t adopt them, they weren't going to have a Christmas.” The skaters shopped for five children between the ages of 8 and 16, plus two single mothers who are struggling to make ends meet. Although Baver expected her teammates to pitch in, she had no idea they would be so generous. “I made a list of everything they would need,” she said. “The 13 year old wanted gymnastics lessons and we arranged that through a gymnastic place in Sandy. I made sure they got one item that they really needed and then we got them one thing they wanted and one thing they could wear back to school.” Along with Christmas gifts, the speedskaters provided Christmas trees, Christmas dinner and even an electric stove and a bed. The Utah Olympic Oval helped out by supplying the two families with a free annual family skating pass. The service project was organized during a busy season for the Short Track World Cup team members who traveled to Nagano, Japan at the beginning of December for a competition. “The girls, we were done and the Christmas presents were wrapped before we left for Japan. We were on top of it.” Baver said. “The guys on the other hand…” Apolo Anton Ohno, Travis Jayner, Anthony Lobello, Ryan Leveille, Simon Cho, Jeff Simon, Alex Izykowski, Jordan Malone, Ryan Bedford, Jessica Smith, Kimberly Derrick, Katherine Reutter, Lana Gehring, Carly Wilson, Mary Grace, Alyson Dudek and Baver participated I the service project. Us Speedskating staff members also got involved including National short track head coach Jae Su Chun, strength trainer Shane Domer, High-performance Director Guy Thibault and short track coordinator Laurent Daignault. “It was great coming together to give the kids a Christmas,” Baver said. “I think this shows that if we can do this, then anyone can help.” For More information, contact: Peri Kinder 801-417-5360 pkinder@usspeedskating.org ____________________________________________________ This alert came from Spencermom at AJ, who apparently had to re- type the whole thing out, as I couldn't grab it off of USS site. Thank You for doing that. Boy, they (USS) sure make it hard to disseminate info.

This is SO typical of Allison. She does it all. I'm telling you, if Apolo let's this one get away he's nuts.

'Way to go, Allison! ;D
She definitelty qualifies as a 'total package' - brains, beauty, compassion, athletic prowess...
And kudos to the rest of the team who participated - we really do have a great bunch of athletes representing us, don't we?

I have always been a fan of Allison but hasn't it been over between Apolo and Allison for a long time now?? I was worried for her at the nationals thinking she may not make the team. Glad to see her make it.

From NBC Universal's site: _______________________________________________________________________________________________
Adding to tasty traditions - Holiday tradition and tasting family cooking compels U.S. short track skater Allison Baver to eat “like a billion cookies” during Christmas as part of her “cheat week” diet, she writes in an email. Baver deviates from her normally stringent training diet during the sporadic “cheat weeks.”
Still, Baver, a 2007 national champion and two-time Olympian, broke convention this holiday season. She and her teammates normally are focused on training and competition during this time of the year. U.S. speedskating held its national championships last weekend.
Following the suggestion of her sister Crystal, Baver and teammates that included 2008 national champions Apolo Anton Ohno and Katherine Reutter, adopted two families who live near the U.S. team’s training base in Salt Lake City, Ut. “It made our locker room fill with Christmas cheer,” she writes. “I hope it becomes not only a U.S. Short Track Team ritual, but something others adopt in their communities.”
The full list of generous skaters includes Travis Jayner, Anthony Lobello, Ryan Leveille, Simon Cho, Jeff Simon, Alex Izykowski, Jordan Malone, Ryan Bedford, Jessica Smith, Kimberly Derrick, Lana Gehring, Carly Wilson, Mary Grace, and Alyson Dudek. Others included National Short Track Head Coach Jae Su Chun, strength trainer Shane Domer, high-performance Director Guy Thibault and short track coordinator Laurent Daignault. They provided gifts, Christmas trees, Christmas dinners, an electric stove and a bed. And the Utah Olympic Oval supplied the two families with free annual family skating passes.
Marceline Brown, who along with her two children received gifts, provided the following passage of gratitude to Baver and her teammates in an email: “Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much! We are going to have a GREAT Christmas! The kids are so stoked to have presents under the tree!! I am humbled by your generosity, and I know it will come back to you 10 fold in Karma!”
U.S. skaters departed to their homes for the holidays following the U.S. championships. Children from the adopted families are planning to attend a practice session after the athletes return to Salt Lake City in early January.

Like how she worked in what is becoming her signature "pink." Guess we know what she's doing as she recovers from surgery. I like the slide show at the top, but my fave pic is still the "casual" Allison in the peach tank. Thanks for the link mtnme

Check it out! www.allisonbaver.com/so there is only one pet peeve i have about the site - her fb is private and i think it should stay that way. however, i know that fans would probably like to be her friend, but i think she should go the ohno route and just make a page, which would be public and you wouldn't have to worry (as much) about all that private stuff getting in the way. cause i'm not so sure i like the idea that her family and friends are put on display like that. but that might just be me.

I'm sorry BBB......what's a "fb" ? what number1 said. :] i personally think it's easier as a 'celeb' to have one since the security on it is better than myspace, imo. however, like i said - her team should do as apolo's has done - a private profile for all friends/family and such and a public page for the fans (that is what its for). actually, now that i think about - i think all the skaters should do that. there are so many of them on fb, its crazy. :]
