Mtnme, I think you've included me in a group of photog's that I don't deserve to be with (I'm not worthy! ) - however, 'cause I promised Apolosgal, here are the last of my photos (and I'm digging deep). A series... (notice how all eyes are on him) The standard pre-race yawn (blurry, but identifiable) And Mtnme, you mentioned a cute 'blondie' - after Ruff suggested it might be Wim de Deyne (Belgium), I dug up a pic from last year's World Cup in the Netherlands - might this be the guy? (He's the one on the left - with him is Nicola Rodigari (ITA) and JP Kepka.) I trust you'll all being rooting for a Canadian world champion this year, yeah? No matter...ahem...who else goes right? LOL! As much as I'd like to oblige, I'll be rooting for Apolo. I'd hate for him to retire without a World Championship on his resume - kinda like Peyton Manning and that Super Bowl ring. After that we'll talk.

..regarding the high fives mtnme...since it was a "gloved" high five--yep washed my hand on my next trip to the ladies room! LOL and he actually did my fingertips...made me wonder if in the past he has done a full-on hi-5 and the fans have inadvertently knocked him off balance or pulled him into the crash pads... If the fans knocked him off balance and pulled him into the crash pads, I doubt it was inadvertent! He's probably been nearly mauled and has had to pull back a bit. Actually, I bet a full-on high-five with his gloves might hurt. I know he's not using the one dipped in acrylic (or whatever), but as he breezes by, it could still sting a little.

(Sorry, Ruff!) He's never won a World Championship? Do you mean overall? Because hasn't he won individual events? How do the WC results work? Do they add in skaters' performances throughout the season or is it a one-shot deal, where how they perform at the World Championships determines the World Champion?

Linmiste, he has won individual events, but if I'm not mistaken, he's never been World Champion. He WAS the overall World Cup champion once, before the 2002 Olympics (youngest ever, and the only American ever, I believe). And yes, the World Championships is a one-shot, stand-alone competition, with medals for each event, and for the overall champion. The qualifier for participation was Nationals in December - the World Cups have no bearing on it. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong! EDIT: Just checked my facts - he's been overall World Cup champion 3 times, but never World Champion - the closest he's come was silver in 2001 and 2005 (just before Olympic years!). He has won gold in every individual event at the World Championships EXCEPT the 500M (1000M, 1500M, 3000M and relay). He has won silver in the 500M. Go get 'em, Apolo!

I didn't know that Apolo hadn't won an overall World Championship. That's sort of like Kirk Douglas and Johnny Depp not winning Academy Awards yet. Could Apolo possibly do that at the World Championships in Korea? Man, I need a Short Track Speed Skating 101 course! It's confusing.
All I know is, when he's out there, all eyes on on him like Lori's pictures so vividly illustrate. I love how some of the ladies are just smiling and some actually have their mouths opened; jawed dropped. And some of the men look like they are kinda sneaking a peak, like they can't quite believe what they're seeing. tee hee!

Apolo has never won a World Championship, which is a stand-alone competition. He has, however, won several World Cup Championships, which are cumulative. Here is his record from Olympia's great reasearch on the A/J site: World Cups 2004/2005 - Overall Champion 2002/2003 - Overall Champion 2000/2001 - Overall Champion World Championships 2007: Bronze Overall Gold, 1500m Bronze, 1000m Bronze, 3000m Bronze, 5000m Relay 2006: Bronze Overall Bronze, 1000m Gold, 1500m Bronze, 3000m Bronze, 5000m Relay 2005: Silver Overall Gold, 1000m Gold, 3000m Bronze, 5000m Relay 2004: 9th Overall 2003: 4th Overall Silver, 3000m 2001: Silver Overall Silver, 1000m Gold, 3000m Gold, 5000m Relay 2000: 9th, Overall 1999: 4th Overall Silver, 500m Ahn from Korea has dominated the World Championships, having won the last 5 overall titles: (2003-2007). Someone will definitely break his streak this year, since he's out with a pretty severe injury. Let's hope that someone is Apolo!

Awww, man! GND, I was so sure I'd converted y'all! Or if not me, then those sweet Canadian encounters had. That's okay, I'll get you and linmiste one day. I'll bring you alllll over to my side one of these old days. I thought Peyton had won the Superbowl? And now his bro has, much to my sister's delight (when she started following football I have no clue, but she has no idea I follow ST so fair's fair). Those are some fug-ass brothers, am I right? Peyton's head looks like a thumb and Eli (I used to be in love with a boy named Eli) looks like he's not quite fully baked. Two thumbs down.

Even YOU have to admit, Apolo's a lot 'purr-tier' than either Manning. Peyton did win the Super Bowl (last year - back-to-back brothers), but people were beginning to wonder if he was jinxed. I was pulling for him, big time. Now he's got his, so Apolo's next... Casper, looks like your post crossed with my edit - thanks for the complete rundown! I have to say, they've put together a nice site there...

Apolo may still be 'the man' in our book, but rest assured, these two certainly are enough to turn your head and make you think twice! And Lori is right, no photo does them justice, as they were both unbelievably more attractive than their photos suggest. (which I'll grant you, the pics ain't bad, but the 'live' versions have smiles that could melt steel) There was a really nice, recent photo somewhere of Charles that was a close up, but I'll be darned if I can find it now-possibly the Quebec WC5 or the Canadian nationals.) Charles Hamelin Jean-Francois Monette And Lori, I'm not sure if that pic of the german is the same guy or not. The gentleman at WC6 had much longer hair. I need to see 'em all before I can make a judgement call.

Dude. That is a thumbhead if I've ever seen one. Hold your thumb up to the screen right now. You'll think you have 2 thumbs. No difference! I still think Apolo's good looking. I just wish he'd, you know...Stop talking. And skating. But keep posing for Cosmo because that was sensational. Ew. I hate myself a little right now. I'm not writing you guys off mtnme! I now sense much Canadian love afoot in this Apolo community, like a Canadian dandelion poking up through a crack in the Apolo sidewalk. It fills my heart with hope that some time in the near future will find us all rejoicing at the incredibly sexy Canadian domination of ST. Ahhhh, I feel much better.

Hi Everyone, I just received this wonderful e-mail by someone who was 'there' in the VIP section after we were banished back to the 'cheap seats' LOL - for those of you who wanted to know what Yuki's reaction is when Apolo is skating.... "during the race Yuki does maintain an Asian reserve, plus a public persona necessitated by his son's celebrity. As proud parent and curator of probably the best and most extensive collection of Apolo' s races, he was video-taping that race -at the end of the race, beamed from ear to ear with that famous Ohno mega-watt smile that lights up a room, coupled with a facial expression of joy. pride , great love and awe at what he had just witnessed. He has said in previous interviews that he knows by just brief glances at Apolo exactly what Apolo is feeling and thinking, such is their bond, and such was the expression on Yuki's face - speaks volumes. He just glowed!!" ____________________________________________________ I'll go with that! As I said at Nationals, one of my most lasting memories is the look on Apolo's face when he skated by where Yuki was in the stands right after a race, looked up and made eye contact. It was the most loving look that completely melted my heart. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it, as it is a look I have never seen from him before - or since. (...and not to pop anyones' bubble, but I never once saw him look at Julianne that way. When I see him look at any woman with that much love,- then, and ONLY then, will I believe his heart is truly taken)

Ruff, if all these pics don't convince you of all the 'Canadian love', I don't know what will. Obviously quite a few of us had our cameras pointed in their direction fairly often.
