Crims,
All you need to do is paste the URL of the avatar you want to use in the Avatar URL box under your Profile (modify profile). You don't need any image tags like you do for the signature. I believe the max size is 100x100 pixels (it may resize it for you, but I'm not sure).
Does that help? I know you asked Nerka, but I thought I try to explain nonetheless.
