Seeing him on DWTS, he was much smaller than I expected. I don't know why I always thought him a bigger guy, but I did. I think it might have to do with seeing him in the short track capacity for many years and the 'tougher' image he portrays on the ice, if that makes sense. Or it could simply be that I was well aware of the muscle that lurked beneath that tight lycra skinsuit!

Or it could simply be that I was well aware of the muscle that lurked beneath that tight lycra skinsuit! I think we're a little fooled because of the company Apolo keeps on the ice--there are a bunch of Asians out there (SHORT!) and even some of the Canadians are close to his height, i.e., gotapolo.com/galleries/albums/Olympics 2006/normal_capt_olypa13402252200_winter_olympics_short_track_speed_skating_tr2__olypa134.jpg[/img] But check that compared to even his U.S. teammates: Then, put him up against an "average" guy... In terms of his actual weight, Apolo speculated at first and then I think confirmed that he'd put on weight because of DWTS. And although he probably did work out different muscle groups, he hadn't been training as much so he probably lost a lil, etc. I think John knows what he's doing in terms of Apolo's weight...

I wonder about Apolo's weight. The bio's always say 165 but we know it's fluctuated. When he didn't make the 1998 Olympic team and went to that cabin by himself, he said his goal was to get "down" to 150 and skate leaner/stronger. Yet, in the year 2000 (when the female coach Susan Ellis changed everything about his training and drove him crazy), he got stronger but also got up to 180 pounds!
So who knows where he was in Torino in 2006 -- I'll guess 165 just because all the bio's say that (and maybe he was 175 in 2002 -- I always think he looks thicker in those pictures than the Torino ones.)
Anyway, on Larry King just before the final week, he said he had gained 3.5 pounds. That's not much, if you ask me, but apparently it was enough for him to have trouble fitting into his pants in the latter season...
Oh well, whatever his weight is now, and I don't think he looks thick at ALL, hopefully losing weight won't weaken him or cause him immune system problems, where he starts catching a lot of colds/viruses - he's struggled with that in the past, along with iron deficiency (he writes about his recurrent health problems in his autobiography - but that was a long time ago so maybe he's past all that.)
I know I should trust John (and Apolo) to know what they're doing but it sure seems scary to lose so much weight when you have to be immensely strong to overtake skaters with those bursts of speed he has. I guess we'll see. Apolo's seldom wrong, so I guess here comes slim strong Apolo, and he'll probably look more gorgeous than ever. And he's got over two years to experiment with his weight/strength ratio and how it affects his skating before Vancouver. I'm sure he'll get it just right.

At this link, it says there will be a behind the scenes video of the photo shoot coming soon. men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_5771That should be good! The other guys look nice in their "afters" too, but, as usual in these types of features, Apolo outshines them by far. He's a real model. That last guy kind of threw me with the green and white polish on his toes. I thought something was really wrong with them at first.

Number1Fan, how is it that your mind is always in the gutter? Good thing I'm on here to offer the board some balance.
