"The Red Badge of Courage" by Stephen Crane, and "Hot Six," one of Janet Evanovich's "Plum" novels. I'm gonna try and track down some Kathy Reichs novels over summer break :D

This doesn't quite qualify as 'reading' per se, as I'm reading it on the internet...but I just had to share. (and I didn't think it warranted a new thread...) [image]

I've always had a curious mind, and things like the Discovery Channel, Animal planet, History channel...etc, etc, I find endlessly entertaining and fascinating.

That being said, the intrepid souls that bring us these amazing photos and footage...with all due respect...at times are just plain FREAKING NUTS!!!

...and to prove my point, I give you:

'Exhibit A'

This is me filming Barbara-Anne. This is not only my favorite tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvieri), but she really loved my camera. She would occasionally swim past the other divers in the water or inspect the second camera, but she would repeatedly swim with swift intention directly up to my camera, mouth open, ready to bite."

"It is well known that a wildlife cameraman gets a false sense of security, almost a feeling of detachment from reality, while looking through the viewfinder of a camera. This was certainly true on this day as, when I looked over my monitor to see Barbara-Anne in her entirety, her nose pushing up against my camera, I realized how large she really was and how easily she could have attacked me had she decided to."
Charles Maxwell

Exhibit B

This is Barbara-Anne, named by Mark Addison, a local dive-charter operator from KwaZulu-Natal. She is one of the greatest sharks that I have had the honor of working with. I was on a drift-dive looking for tiger sharks. As nothing was happening, I sunk to the bottom and started filming a moray eel. As I glanced over my shoulder, I saw this four-meter (13-foot) tiger shark so close to me that I could have touched it. At first I found it quite unnerving that the shark could have got so close without my knowing it. For the next hour she swam around me, biting my camera and bumping into me. As this was the only shark in the area, I soon relaxed and enjoyed this special experience."
Charles Maxwell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OMG!!! :o ...they actually NAMED the freaking shark!!!

Exhibit C
(same guy, different - (and nastier) shark)

"I was filming a white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) on seal-predation sequence for the BBC. I had managed to get permission to use a seal carcass for the underwater shot, which was floating behind the boat. I had my polecam in the water. A large white shark arrived but did not seem very interested in the easy feast on offer. It would swim around the carcass occasionally bumping it with its nose. To make things even more difficult, the underwater visibility was very poor, about four meters (13 feet). After a time the shark disappeared, but I kept the camera rolling. After about five minutes, there was a huge splash and my polecam was airborne. The next thing that I was aware of in the ensuing chaos was that the head of this huge shark, jaws snapping, was sharing the diving platform with me. Note how the sharks eyes are rolled back in attack mode. Fortunately, there is no record of how my eyes looked at that moment."
Charles Maxwell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forget how his eyes looked, I'll bet he 'sullied' his shorts too! I know I would have!!!!

:o No thanks. I'm just fine viewing sharks on tv and on the computer. To see one in person, no thanks. Eep!

I'm reading East of Peculiar. Found out that there was a book five in the series. I'll buy that next week. I'm only on book one. I love the older characters in the book. IdaClare being my favorite one so far. (By Suzann Ledbetter)

Finished reading Black Cat and Child of Darkness by VC Andrews. I forgot how heartbreaking her and her ghost writers stories really are. Grace, from another series is still my VC character. And I cried when her character died later in that same series. I also like Laura, she also died. I think that book is called Music in the Night, or close to it.
I'm about ready to start another book, but I haven't decided yet. Either way it's going to be a paranormal romace.

yep, very nice sharks :D
i read a lot this summer, including the majority of Anne McCaffrey's "Pern" series. right now I'm about 3/4 of the way through "The White Dragon." it's great how the books i read in middle school are every bit as fascinating now as they were back then.
I think next I'm gonna tackle another Kathy Reichs - "Monday Mourning." Either that or one of the other books I brought with me :)

Ooh, vampires. Looks like a good read.
Speaking of vamps, they are the bad guys in Christine Feehan's books. Carpathians that turned to the dark side. I'm reading Dark Symphony. I read a lot of her stuff, then go back and re-read it. I like that much. I want to finish so I can read My Sister's Keeper. I'm going to bawl, I know it. And losing my own sis, it's going to be even sadder. :(
